SPELLING

Most children need to be taught to spell correctly. Therefore, spelling is the main focus for one lesson each week. The spelling activities are designed to introduce groups of words that use new spelling patterns, and revise the alternative vowel sound spellings.

First spelling is all about the child listening for the sounds in a word and writing the letters that represent the sounds, and then systematically learning spellings of a few 'tricky' words. After completing the previous class, most children have a reading age of at least 7 years of age and are able to use analogy in their reasoning: a useful spelling strategy. In this course, the children will be encouraged to think analogically by recognising spelling patterns

This course covers the following spelling features:

1. Vowel digraphs

2. Alternative Letter Sound Spellings

3. New Spelling Patterns

4. Silent Letters

5. Syllables

6. Identifying the Short Vowels

7. Spelling Rules

8. Tricky Word Families

The first lesson of each week concentrates on spelling. The spelling lessons all follow the same basic format,

a. Spelling Test

b. Revision

c. Spelling Pattern

d. Spelling List

e. Activity Page

f. Dictation

GRAMMAR

The benefits of learning grammar from such an early age will help your child improve massively in the quality of their early writing. As they grow older, the knowledge they have gained now will give them all the confidence they need to understand complicated texts, use Standard English correctly and also learn foreign languages with ease.

This programme is designed to use one universal phonics-based dialect. This will help EAL children as well as English-speaking children to speak and write Standard English. It is important to understand that dialects are NOT wrong, but there is a standard form that exists.

This course is designed to extend the children's knowledge and understanding of SPaG that have been introduced in Jolly Grammar 1 (the previous course).

Throughout this course your children's knowledge of sentences will be refined and punctuation will be more precise. The children will also be introduced to new concepts, such as irregular verbs, and to new parts of speech, namely possessive adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions, and comparatives and superlatives.

It is optional, but highly recommended for students to purchase the Jolly phonics dictionary as this will aid them throughout this course. This is a link to what the dictionary looks like.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT FINISH THE ACTIVITY IN CLASS, THEY CAN FINISH IT FOR HOMEWORK AND SEND A PICTURE OF THEIR WORK TO BE MARKED

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a UK qualified teacher of 19 years with 4 years of online teaching experience. I have taught a variety of subjects including basic reading and writing, musical mathematics, music, geography, drawing and cake decorating to name a few.

I absolutely love to teach children in ways that are fun and engaging, rather than the textbook norm. I believe children learn best when they are having fun and feel safe - all of which I encourage in my classes. No child will be left behind and all children will be involved if they wish to be.

I look forward to meeting your children from my home here in the UK.
