US Grade 2 - 4
The spelling of homonyms and homophones, words that have the same pronunciation but different spellings and meanings, can be tricky to remember. In this class, students will learn mnemonic devices and visual spelling clues in a fun, creative way to help them distinguish between pairs of homonyms and homophones. During each class meeting, 4 pairs of homonyms will be introduced. We will review the definition of each word, introduce mnemonic and visual tips to remember the difference between the 2 words, practice using the correct word in sentences, and create flashcards (one with the word and one with a picture) for each pair of homonyms. These flashcards are great for games, such as Memory! Worksheets to practice writing the right word are posted in the Classroom after each class as well! This class also encourages learners to look at a word in a way that will help them remember how it is spelled, i.e. by where the vowels are placed, or familiar words embedded in the word that clue you into its meaning, etc. This is particularly helpful for words that don’t follow standard spelling rules and for visual learners and those who need extra tools to make the spelling of words stick. Be sure to bring 16-18 index cards to class each time we meet to make the flashcards. If you don’t have index cards, cutting a piece of paper into 4 rectangles works. Also, bring crayons or colored pencils. These will be good to practice with during the week, and I encourage you to use them to play Memory with a family member! **The spelling words taught in class are about a 2nd - 3rd-grade level. However, older children who have trouble remembering which spelling to use for these homophones would benefit from the class. Thus, I offer a wide age range for this class.** List of Homophone Pairs covered in class: Week of Oct. 9th: Meat/Meet, Flour/Flower, Break/Brake, Heard/Herd Week of Oct. 16th: Where/Wear, Sore/Soar, Pair/Pear/Pare, Hair/Hare Week of Oct. 23rd: Dear/Deer, Here/Hear, Stair/Stare, Bear/Bare Week of Oct. 30th: Cell/Sell, Fair/Fare, Cent/Scent/Sent, Fairy/Ferry Week of Nov. 6th: Feat/Feet, Fir/Fur, Heal/Heel, Pain/Pane Week of Nov. 13th: Peace/Piece, Right/Write, Road/Rode, Sail/Sale Week of Nov. 20th: No Class Week of Nov. 27th: Sea/See, Son/Sun, Stake/Steak, Tail/Tale Week of Dec. 4th: Waist/Waste, Weak/Week, Weather/Whether, Witch/Which WINTER BREAK Please note, this class will repeat content every 8 weeks. **Ongoing Class Format Notice** After the initial subscription payment, you will be billed weekly for this class on Sunday mornings.
