Spelling Club Using Multisensory

In this ongoing class, students will receive explicit instruction to master spelling rules. Students learn a new spelling rule in each class.

Homework
1 hour per week. I will provide an optional packet to give learners extra practice with each week's spelling rule. Learners may do one page, a few pages, or all the pages.
Assessment
I will provide a progress report upon request. You must request the progress report before attending the first class.

Beginner Level
In this ongoing class. students will learn and practice spelling rules. The classes do not build upon each other so you can join anytime. 

During each class, students will ... 
        - learn a new spelling rule
        - practice the spelling rule
        - apply the spelling rule in a fun game


***** BACKGROUND *****
Spelling is a foundational skill that students need to master in order to become master writers. This class will provide the specific details of each spelling rule to help support learners in becoming fluent spellers. 


***** PREREQUISITES *****

This class is a great fit for students who ...
      - Know their letter names and letter sounds
      - Can easily spell CVC words


 Below is a breakdown of each class:

***** Phonemic Awareness *****
We will start with a phonemic awareness activity. Students will determine the number of sounds in different words. Students will tap out the sounds in the words by using chips/blocks. The words will follow the spelling rule for the class.

***** Mini-Lesson on Spelling Rule *****
I will introduce students to the spelling rule. I will show an anchor chart modeling the spelling rule. 


***** Practice Spelling *****
Students will practice spelling words that follow the spelling word. We will use multisensory to help spell each word.

 We will use the follow procedure when spelling:
           - Pound out each syllable/word
           - Use chips/blocks to count out the sounds in each word
           - Spell each word using the spelling rule

Sentence Dictation:

I will give a sentence for students to write:
       - Say the sentence.
       - Pound out the words in the sentence.
       - Write the sentence. 
       - Read the sentence. 


***** Spelling Game *****
Students will play a spelling game. Games will vary each class. 

Some of the games will include:
      - Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe
      - Spelling Board Game
      - Spelling War
      - Spelling Four in a Row

I will provide an optional packet that your learn can use to practice the spelling rule. Your learner may choose to complete one page, a few pages, or all the pages.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some of the optional packet activities include cut and paste activities. Students will need scissors and glue. Scissors must be carefully observed when using the scissors and may need some support. Glue is not gluten-free. The glue should never be placed into a child's mouth. I use Google Slides to share the content in this course. I screenshare my presentation during the class.
