This class is appropriate for beginning and intermediate readers who know all the sounds of the alphabet. For this age group, the difficulty of the words we will work with range from: "boot", "suit" and "new" to more difficult words like "cruise", "nuisance", and "prudent". The Phono-graphix method for teaching reading is used in this class. Students will interact with text and a collection of words to discover all the different ways the sound /oo/ is spelled in our language. This is a...
This class will focus on the nine different ways we have to spell the sound /oo/ like in the word "New". Students will sort a word list of /oo/ words into the different spellings, paying careful attention to the exact letters that represent the /oo/ sound. We then connect how knowing these spellings helps them read new words that include them. For example, knowing that /oo/ can be spelled with EW, a student can figure out a new word like SHREWD much faster than if he/she tried to sound out each individual letter. We will also discuss other sounds that some of the nine spellings represent and how to cope with them when decoding new words.
This is one of my most eye-opening lessons I teach within the Phono-graphix method of teaching reading. It makes students very aware of why our language can be difficult to read and spell. I have been teaching this lesson with my private students for over 20 years and I've seen great improvements with student reading after this type of lesson.
Students will generate their own lists of /oo/ words from their daily reading and sort them into their lists. Completed work can be shared with the teacher for feedback. Feedback will also include a recommendation for other classes that are related to these skills.
The student only needs pencil and paper for this lesson. Any handouts the student needs will be provided in the classroom. Students may have an opportunity to use Zoom's annotate feature while we read stories featuring the /oo/ sound. If your child would like to engage in that whole group activity, please make sure that they know how to use the annotate feature.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
