-- What Is Taught --

Students will learn a basic speech outline that uses the introduction, body, conclusion format. This is used for informative, persuasive, demonstrative, and debate speeches. All students begin with informative speaking. Next, they will do persuasive and demonstrative. Finally, they will choose from a myriad of speeches that vary in length, skill sets, and structures. Every student is unique. They have varying degrees of speech skills, so I keep the class at a maximum of 4 students. This provides me with the ability to work with each student where they are at and help them improve at their own pace. Some students join the class with no experience, while others have participated in debate clubs and speech competitions.

We will loosely adhere to the following rotation: speech preparation, speech presentation, activity day. This is an Ongoing class and I never know who will be in class week to week. Each week's schedule is tentative and subject to change.

-- Speech Preparation --

Each student will have their own independent speech to prepare based on how long they have been in class and their speech skill. I encourage students to work on their speeches at home if they have time, but I understand that students travel, become ill, have homework, and study for exams.

-- Speech Presentation --

Students will present their speeches once I have checked to ensure they have all parts of the speech structure and meet the time requirements. Feedback will be given to let them know what they are doing well and what areas they can improve in. I can make accommodations if your learner is anxious about presenting in front of others and being put in the spotlight.

-- Activity Day --

This is a fun day for the class to interact with each other, work on improving skills, and having conversations. Developing good conversational skills will help students improve their presentation skills, especially if they use a lot of filler words. Some common skills to improve are: eye contact, tone of voice, and speech speed.

-- Student Expectations --

I hold high expectations for students. Each student should be able to understand, speak, read, and write English proficiently. We begin with simple topics and short time limits of around 2.5 - 3 minutes. The end goal is to prepare and present full length speeches that take 7-9 minutes to present. This is not a conversation class to learn English as a Second Language.
