Welcome to Speech 101! In this class students will learn about public speaking and the 4 main types of speeches. The goal is to help learners gain public speaking skills. Learners will learn about Demonstration speeches, informative speeches, impromptu speeches, and persuasive speeches. Week 1: Demonstration speech: students will demonstrate something during class. This can be as simple as folding a towel, brushing hair, doing a braid, showing how to tie a shoe, setting the table, drying a dish. It has to be a skill where they teach their fellow student how to do something. They will learn about informative speeches. Week 2: Informative Speech: An informative speech is to inform their fellow students about something. This could be very simple like the importance of washing our hands, why to eat healthy, why to drink enough water during the day. Week 3: Impromptu Speech: Students will learn about impromptu speeches. These are no prep speeches that students will pick a topic that the teacher has and they will state what they know about the topic. Impromptu speeches can be very simple like: What do you know about dogs/cats, video gaming, Favorite YouTube, Favorite TV show. Week 4: Persuasive Speech: The last speech that students will learn about is persuasive speech. These speeches will persuade their fellow students to like something or try something (must be positive, encouraging, and appropriate. These topics will be given out by the teacher to ensure the topic is appropriate). It can be as simple why students should have better time management skills, why students should eat an after school snack, why snacks should be allowed during school. These speeches are opinion based not fact based. Students will then present their speeches during class. Each speech will have a time limit in order to allow enough time for all learners to speak during class. Speech topics will be appropriate at all times. Students will not be permitted to make fun of other students and their speeches.
Learning Goals
Leaners will learn about different types of public speaking speeches. They will gain the confidence in public speaking.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kari Coburn, better known as Teacher Kari in the classroom. It is so nice to meet you!
I love to teach! I have been teaching in some capacity for over twenty years teaching students of all ages (3-65+). I am currently a learning coach for my two teenage sons and have done so for the past 7 years. I also currently teach English online to Chinese children and have done so for almost a year. I also tutor elementary aged students in my area English, History, and Mathematics. I have taught students how to spell, blending phonics words, how to read, how to find joy in reading, proper sentence structure, how to find the main idea in a story, how to find the theme of a story, how to write papers for school. I have taught students how to have fun with creative writing by incorporating fictional and non fictional settings. I have taught students to be creative with learning History, by making themselves be a historical figure and create a fun and interesting story based on the events in history that the student is learning. I have helped create a geography review game to assist students in learning different countries throughout the world. I have also helped students learn the United States Presidents as well as the states. I have helped students review History/Social Studies homework, how to do multiple mathematics operations, taught students how to cook and bake. I have taught students how to have fun crafting. I was a Spanish tutor for four years during college. I helped students retain the basics in Spanish (i.e. colors, alphabet, numbers, subjects, verbs, subject-verb agreement), as well as assisted with the retention of verbs and verb conjugations. I also helped my students learn conversation questions and create correct sentence structure. I am looking forward to teaching students on my passions, which are English, History/Social Studies, Mathematics, cooking and baking, and crafting. I am also looking forward to combining reading and creative writing with Harry Potter, Disney, My Little Pony, Wrestling, and much more. I love teaching online and I look forward to sharing my expertise on Outschool.
I believe learning should be fun, engaging, interactive, and memorable. When class is memorable and fun, students also remember the things they have learned. When students are excited about what they have learned, they want to continue to learn.
Besides teaching, I love to spend time with my husband and two teenage sons. We enjoy traveling and visiting amusement parks. We also enjoy going to the gym as a family and we love watching some of our favorite TV shows and movies together. I have a chihuahua named George and he is 11 years old. We live in Indiana and our town has a small zoo. I am a huge Disney and Harry Potter fan. I have visited Disney World 6 times and look forward to going again. I am looking forward to one day visiting Harry Potter World too!
If you have any thoughts about a class you would like me to offer, or a time you hope I can schedule a session, please send me a message.
I am so excited to be here and teach! See you soon in class!
