Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Outschool's community theme this month is all about celebrating the diversity of the world around us, especially within Outschool itself! We have learners from all over the world and it is part of what makes this such a special place to learn.

Stories help us explore and talk about all kinds of differences in our world - different skin tones, different cultures, different interests. They also help us find commonality amongst all of those differences. 👧🧑🏻👦🏼🧒🏽👩🏾👨🏿‍🦲

Join me as we read the story We're Different, We're the Same And We're All Wonderful by Bobbi Jane Kates.

Our friends from Sesame Street help us celebrate the things that make us different and how that adds richness to the world. They also point out that even if our noses, skin, or hairstyles look different, the purpose of those things is the same.

In this class, we will:
1. Introduce ourselves with a silly ice breaker question.
2. Sing a fun welcome song. 🎶
3. Read the story together. 📕
4. Share one thing that makes us special (if comfortable).
5. Make paper plate puppets - 1 that looks like you and 1 that looks different.

The beauty of this world is that we all bring something unique to the table and that is worth celebrating! I cannot wait to celebrate what makes you YOU!

Parental Guidance
If you learner struggles to use scissors safely, please be sure to be close by to assist them so they stay safe. Or feel free to cut out materials prior to the start of class. And please be sure to make sure you remain off camera per Outschool's policy of only allowing the enrolled learner to be seen in the classroom. This class is all about celebrating what makes us special and different. My top priority is for all learners to feel safe sharing what makes them unique and so only kind, encouraging language will be allowed. If a learner is struggling in this area, I will mute their microphone to protect the whole class experience.
Supply List
Paper plates, popsicle/craft sticks (optional)
To decorate the puppet: buttons, yarn, googly eyes, markers, crayons or any other materials that would be fun

I will provide a face template in a variety of skin tones that can be printed and cut out to glue on the paper plate. You can also use construction paper, paint, crayons or markers if you do not wish to print.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
When I taught in a brick and mortar preschool, I was in an immensely diverse neighborhood and my classroom reflected that. I loved getting to know the different cultures they represented. Also, as a nanny, I have experience responding to questions and observations about the differences kids noticed in other people. For example, when a child I cared for asked why a boy's skin was so much darker than hers, I told her about the role melanin plays in how our skin looks.
