Xochimilco, Mexico is a popular tourist destination. These canals leading out of Mexico City and the small islands along the canals are filled with tourist boats, floating restaurants, dancing, music, and fun. However, if you are someone who likes to explore darker corners of the world, stay on the boat longer, and take the 2.5-3 hour trip to the Island of the Dolls, la isla de las munecas. Created by Julian Barrera over 60 years ago the island was not created as a tourist destination but as a home where Juan would use his dolls to shield him from the dangerous spirits he believed lurked just outside his island. This is a class of mermaids, legends, and gory history and it all begins with the story of a young girl drowning near Julian's island. This class will be EXTRA scary. Parents please read parental warning section prior to enrollment. My classes are designed for all kinds of learners to have the best experience possible. I use a combination of storytelling and video to create a memorable, interactive, and interesting class experience. My classes are designed using Universal Design and E-Theory as well as the best practices in educational design to make sure that all learners have the ability to participate and learn in my classes. I generally spend 10-16 hours researching and preparing a single class to ensure that all my classes present accurate information in an interesting format. My classes are designed for high information retention aka learning. Not all parents and students like this format however it is highly effective for most students including those with special learning needs.
Learning Goals
Students will learn some of the history of Xochimilco, Mexico including about the people who have lived here, some of the local legends, and the mystery of Doll Island. Students will also learn to identify the real doll island versus the fake one.

Parental Guidance
This class is an EXTRA RED class, in the context of my classes, this means most students will find this class to be interesting, thrilling, and perhaps scary.
Students who do not like scary stories like Goosebumps and similar will likely not enjoy this class. They will likely enjoy my green or yellow classes.
In this class you should expect that I will address: The Aztecs and human sacrifice, the legend of La Llorona (a woman who drowned her children), and the island of the dolls (which is supposedly haunted and a little girl drown there). All of these things tie together in this class, and are not randomly selected. I have researched this class with people who have lived in Xochimilco and have verified the accuracy of this class in terms of the beliefs of locals and the local legends.
