In this 4 session Special FX class, you will learn how to make scar wax, different types of blood and gel for burns, scars and wounds, to achieve realistic injuries for Halloween, cosplay, theater, film, TV, costumes or just plain fun.

Class experience

Students will learn how to make different types of fake blood, scar wax for wounds, as well as burn gel, using household items. Also, how to capitalize on everyday, drugstore makeup items, for Special FX looks.

For our 1st class, we will use corn syrup OR honey AND food coloring, as well as flour or coffee creamer, regular granulated coffee and a few drops of dish/liquid soap, to make our blood types that we will use in all other classes. Also, we will use all purpose flour OR baby powder, along with petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to make our scar wax, also needed in our upcoming classes.

Please keep your scar wax and 3 blood types in a covered container and/or Ziplock bag at room temperature, and bring to each session.

Every class is a bit different, but keep in mind blood will be used every class (that’s why it’s the first thing we make), as well as whatever you choose to use to paint your looks: black, purple/burgundy, red, white makeup (these can be cream paints, lipsticks, cream or liquid liners, or even powder eyeshadows or pigments and Vaseline) and a foundation that matches your skin tone (which can be cream, liquid or powder). Also, a loose setting powder (could be baby powder or translucent powder) and small brushes (they can be the cheap plastic ones from Dollar Tree or Walmart, of the Wet n Wild $1 brushes). I usually get most of my supplies from Dollar Tree (except glycerin, used for our 3rd class, which I buy at the pharmacy or supermarket or online).

For our 2nd class, we will need the blood and scar wax we made in class #1, along with our “paints“ (makeup), as well as gift tissue (red, pink or white) or toilet paper, school glue (liquid white glue), cotton swabs (Q-tips). Also, scissors to cut our paper and cotton swabs.

For our 3rd class, we will need unflavored gelatin, glycerin (mine is from CVS pharmacy) and water, alongside access to a microwave or stove, a microwave-safe container OR a mug and small pot (if using stove), a plastic spoon or popsicle stick to stir, and a kitchen towel or oven mitt to get the gelatin out of the microwave/off the stove. A double boiler or even a coffee warmer could substitute the use of the microwave, if unavailable. As needed for all classes: blood, makeup products (including setting powder) and brushes. Optional: food coloring.

The 4th class would be your Final Look, so bring whatever each student chooses to use. Also, I will teach additional textures/color palettes for other characters (zombies, vampires, aliens, etc.) using cereal (such as corn flakes, Frosted Flakes or Honey Bunches of Oats), while I’m also there to guide each student through the completion of their Final Look.

Please feel free to share any pictures of our classes on the review portion of our main class link, so other learners can see your awesome creations.

I’m excited to see you all soon!

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sometimes, graphic images of real injuries, such as burns and cuts, may be used as a visual reference, to make the Special FX makeup recreations appear as real as possible. Also, we will work using language related to injuries, bullet wounds and burns, as well as graphic descriptions in order to emulate these wounds.
