Course Description: 1:1 Phonics, Spelling, and Beginning Writing This specialized tutoring is tailored for students aged 9-12 who have specific learning disabilities or dyslexia, focusing on foundational literacy skills through an Orton-Gillingham approach. Emphasizing individualized instruction, the course is designed to address below-grade-level reading abilities, distinct from traditional English Language Arts courses. Key Components: - Phonics Mastery: Systematic instruction in phoneme-grapheme relationships to improve decoding skills and reading fluency. - Spelling Strategies: Multi-sensory techniques to reinforce spelling patterns and enhance retention. - Reading Comprehension: Targeted exercises to develop understanding and application of phonics skills in reading contexts. - Beginning Writing: Scaffolded instruction in basic writing skills, including sentence structure, grammar, and composition, to support literacy development. Instructional Approach: - Orton-Gillingham Method: A structured, sequential, and cumulative approach that accommodates the multisensory learning needs of students with dyslexia or specific learning disabilities. - Individualized Learning Plans: Tailored to each student's unique strengths and challenges, ensuring personalized instruction and progress monitoring -Online Interactive exercises and typing/spelling programs to reinforce phonics and spelling concepts. Course Objectives: - Build foundational skills in phonics and spelling to enhance reading accuracy and fluency. - Foster confidence and independence in reading and writing tasks. - Develop strategies for overcoming challenges related to dyslexia or specific learning disabilities. - Prepare students for future academic success by strengthening fundamental literacy skills.

The goal is to bring students with learning difficulties in reading and writing, up to grade level with systematic, structured, research based teaching methods and materials.
Other Details
Learning Needs
This class is desigined for struggling readers, dyslexia, dyscalcula, learning disabilitites and ADHD. It is not designed for intellectual disabilities or individuals with autism. Curriculum consulting available for homeschooling families.
Parental Guidance
Classic children's literature and poetry are used for reading comprehension, phonemic awareness and fluency.
Supply List
Blast Off to Reading Student Workbook and Scholastic Spelling Dictionary *Notebook/paper *Pens, pencils, crayons, fingerpaints and/or watercolors (red crayons and pencils are most often used, including colored pencils) *Index cards or printer for flashcards *Blue and red magnetic letters are highly recommended *Montessori Sand Tray or DIY- 8x8 baking pan with cornmeal for tactile learning *Other tactile materials such as play dough, shaving cream, gel, fabric or sandpaper-student preference *7- Count plastic canvas (any craft store) this is also for tactile learning Note: You do not need to buy expensive materials. These are mostly for kinesthetic and tactile learning and can easily be DIY at home.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences and Mathematics and a Master's degree in Special Education with an endorsement in teaching reading. I also completed Orton-Gillingham training in Wilson Language and hold a master's degree in Data Analytics. I have over 20 years experience tutoring and teaching children in a variety of settings.
