Beginner Level
Public speaking is the #1 fear for most people, but starting young can make all the difference! In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn to overcome their fear of public speaking while building confidence in their communication skills. Designed for kids and teens, this course introduces the essentials of speech writing and delivery, guiding learners step-by-step through the process of crafting and presenting their own speeches. The course is divided into three exciting modules: 1. Types of Speeches: Students will explore the four main types of speeches—informative, demonstrative, persuasive, and entertaining—learning how to tailor their message for different audiences and purposes. 2. Speech Writing Skills: From creating an outline to writing a great hook, this module teaches students how to structure a compelling speech. They'll discover techniques to engage the audience, such as using active voice and writing for the ear, so their message is clear and captivating. 3. Presentation Tips: In the final module, students will learn key presentation skills like tone, volume, pacing, eye contact, and posture. These tools will help them deliver their speeches with confidence, ensuring their message is heard and remembered. By the end of this course, learners will not only feel more comfortable speaking in front of others but also be equipped with the skills to write and deliver powerful speeches. This is a self-paced course so learners can move forward at their own pace. This course includes 9 video lessons, activities, outlines, examples and a grading rubric.

I’m a proud graduate of Marshall University with a BA in Broadcast Journalism. I started my career as a news reporter in WV and then SC where I would broadcast to hundreds of thousands of people about the daily happenings, many times truly impromptu due to not having enough time to gather info about breaking news, or system failures that made the teleprompter go blank.
That’s no small task, especially if you rewind to when I was a child and suffocatingly shy. Thankfully, I had that ONE teacher that made all the difference. Mrs. Day was a middle school English teacher and also coached the school’s forensics team. She saw something in me, and gave me the confidence to break out of my shell to compete and win many speaking competitions, and ultimately sent me on the path to a career in communications.
Our goal is to be that teacher for your child. The one that gives them the self-confidence to not only overcome the fear of public speaking, but to help them excel at it!
