In this 2-week multi-day class (exact same content as my own 6-week Spar Lit Jr 5: Understanding Blue Balliett's "Chasing Vermeer" Through Debate) will explore the deeper meanings of the best-selling puzzle-mystery using debate techniques.

Class experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
6 lessons//2 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction and discussion of chapters 1-4
Introduction and discussion of chapters 1-4 and Spar Debate sparked by: "Ms. Hussey listened carefully to kids’ ideas and didn’t care about right and wrong answers." Spar Statement: In school correct answers are most important for learning to progress. Position 1: Agree with the above statement. Position 2: Disagree with the above statement. Creative thinking and innovative ideas are most important for learning.
Lesson 2
Discussion of chapters 5-8
Discussion of chapters 5-8 and Spar Debate sparked by: "Spar Question: What makes an object a work of art?" Position 1: A work of art is something that is created by an artist to be a thing of beauty and to communicate an idea or ideas to people. Position 2: A work of art is something that a person loves for whatever reason, something that speaks to them. The artist doesn’t matter.
Lesson 3
Discussion of chapters 9-12
Discussion of chapters 9-12 and Spar Debate sparked by: Spar Question: Who should determine a true work of art? Position 1: The experts. These are people who have spent their lives and careers studying, discussing, researching, and looking at art. Position 2: Everyday regular people. As Petra says, these are the people art was made for anyway right?
 Week 2
Lesson 4
Discussion of chapters 13-16
Discussion of chapters 13-16 and Spar Debate sparked by: "And they note that sometimes you just have to forge ahead without knowing why." Spar Statement: There are times when you have to “go with your instincts” and keep investigating, keep going with an idea even if it doesn’t make sense. Position 1: Agree with this statement. Explain. Position 2: Disagree with this statement. No, you need to have actual facts before pursing a plan both for safety and keep from mistakes.
Lesson 5
Discussion of chapters 17-20
Discussion of chapters 17-20 and Spar Debate sparked by: "They were examining art with a toughness and intensity usually seen in the buyers of new cars or electronics." Spar Question: Why don’t people usually take the time to really look closely and think about art? Position 1: People don’t take the time to really look closely and think about art because they are too busy and preoccupied. Explain Position 2: People don’t take the time to really look closely and think about art
Lesson 6
Discussion of chapters 21-24 (END)
Discussion of chapters 21-24 and Spar Debate sparked by: "Maybe certain experiences in life are meant to fit together like pentominoes." Spar Question: Do things in life — both good and bad — happen for a reason? Position 1: Yes they do. And even if it’s not clear at the time everything eventually fits together, as Calder says, “like pentominoes.” Position 2: No, things happen because they happen and we need to respond and react accordingly.
