This Spanish 1B course follows first year Spanish in secondary school (middle school or high school). This is not an immersion class, it is taught in English but we speak a lot of Spanish. Topics discussed: thematic vocabulary (clothing, colors, weather, seasons) that builds on verbs + verb conjugations, writing, reading, listening and speaking, all with the goal that students will be able to communicate in the language. Topics are listed below and may vary depending on the students interests and the class dynamics. week 1: REVIEW: introductions (say hello, good-bye, how are you) + colors + questions 1a week 2: numbers 30-100 + days of the week + seasons (las estaciones) week 3: describe activities + places ( + likes/dislikes during week days and weekend) week 4: ask others about themselves and describe self + regular verbs week 5: learn several regular verbs (-AR, -ER, -IR) week 6: describe activities (create a daily schedule) week 7: presentation y practice (describe activities on different days, seasons + likes / dislikes) week 8: describe weather (el clima) and several verbs (llevar + necesitar + tener* + querer*) I like/love / I don’t like/love week 9: clothing (la ropa) (+ colors) and describe what I wear, want, have + ask others about what they wear, want, have week 10: final presentations CULTURA: + 21 Spanish-speaking countries, their capital cities * some Irregular verbs (tener & querer) Profesora D uses strategies that help students learn quickly and feel good about their ability to learn another language. Focus is on fluency (pronunciation, correct sentence structure, a variety of vocabulary). Class time involves presenting/learning vocabulary (time with teacher), breakouts to practice (with other students) and FUN homework to prepare for next class. Focus in class is on speaking and conversation for retention and proficiency. Each topic includes several strategies for learning. Students will create a portfolio of electronic assignments and will present their topic assignments during class time and at the end of each class/course. Students are encouraged to create/use vocabulary that fits their lives, personalities, and interests. Class time is precious and we will be using Spanish for most of class time. No knowledge of Spanish is needed, as this is beginner/novice level. Students with some introductory Spanish classes can also find success in this class as this course focuses on these specific topics and builds conversational ability in tandem with reading and writing. Listening is incorporated as a natural extension with the other areas. Students may find having a physical notebook (un cuaderno) handy and preferable to an electronic notebook in order to create sentence examples along with the teacher as she presents each topic and the lessons in the class/course. This is the second of 6 classes that includes an entire year of Spanish 1.
Learning Goals
Goals: Students will be able to:
(1) pronounce our vocabulary correctly in Spanish,
(2) converse in Spanish by introducing yourself and ask questions about those you meet,
(3) describe their likes and dislikes / their favorite activities / their family and where they live, and ask others questions to learn about them,
(4) understand a Spanish speaker or language learner as they describe themselves, their interests, family members or favorite celebrations.
Students will learn to speak and practice repeatedly, all sentences and vocabulary for introductions, hellos, good-byes as well as 4 ways to describe themselves in Spanish.
Students will learn to describe their families (and other people) using vocabulary that is culturally appropriate.
Students will learn to describe popular celebrations and their favorite activities in all 4 seasons.
Students will apply their learning of each class time to create a presentation about themselves, their families, and their favorite celebrations.

Teacher expertise and credentials
<I am taking a hiatus until January 2025> ~ Profesora D
Hola - I am a National Board Certified Teacher of Spanish language and culture, from the novice levels to advanced of Spanish language learners, including heritage speakers in Washington state. I am a public school teacher for 20+ years, have tried and true methods for language learning, and love to share my passion for this beautiful language with young people. As well as my National Board Certification (until 2031), I have a Master's in Teaching, a Bachelor's of Arts in Spanish, a Bachelor's of Science in Botany, College Board certified to teach AP Spanish Language & Culture, and TEFL certified (Teaching English As A Foreign Language.)
I have loved Spanish since I first heard it at 5 years old and have spent my life immersed in this amazing culture and language. I value hard work more than perfect pronunciation as that will help my students more in life and I know from first hand experience that everyone can learn. My classes are fun, interactive, conversational, and academic (although I slip this in and students are having so much fun that they forget they are in class). I have also created a few classes in Udemy.com that focus on Spanish grammar. In addition, I spend my time with my family and friends, cooking, going on walks, camping, biking, reading, and, of course, watching movies. I can't wait to meet you in our virtual classroom!
