Description

Class Experience

This class is to help bilingual (Spanish and English) students continue to build their vocabulary and language understanding, as well as nuances in translation and factors to consider when translating, through the use of music.  Using the Disney hits "Part of Your World" and "Under the Sea" we will explore the choice of language used in those songs, and compare them to what was sung in English.  Where are they different? Students will be introduced to having to make some strategic decisions in translation and the art of translation.  They will add to their current vocabulary, clarify some gramatical nuances between the two languages.

Teacher is a life-long Spanish speaker and has a bachelor's and a master's degree in Spanish as well as a graduate certificate in translation.

I will provide 3-column lyric sheets before class with the Spanish lyrics, a loose English translation of those Spanish lyrics, and what was actually sung in the English version for comparison and discussion.  There will also be bolded vocabulary words with translations, and space to take additional notes.

1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.

We will refer to clips and music from the Spanish language copy of the Disney film The Little Mermaid.
