This is a great class if you plan to take your child on vacation to a Spanish speaking country and want to prepare him/her with some basic Spanish related to travel. This class is recommended for students with some basic knowledge of Spanish words such as greetings, colors, and/or numbers. We will be expanding from their prior knowledge and learning words related to travel and clothes. In this class I will utilize an intuitive and interactive form of teaching a new language called- Teaching Through Reading & Storytelling (TPRS) and Comprehensible Input (CI). I hope to take my students into a deeper experience of understanding the language. TPRS is a specific instructional strategy that consists of three phases: establishing meaning, storyasking, and reading. The way in which those three phases are realized varies greatly from teacher to teacher and from lesson to lesson, but the three phases are always there. Comprehensible Input (CI) is language that we receive (read or hear) that is comprehensible to us (we understand it). Through my experience in teaching languages for over 5 years I have found various methods that work for my younger students. I tailor each lesson to match the type of learning that best works for that group- whether it is more visual, auditory, tactile, or movement based. This class in particular will focus on a key set of simple vocabulary words in the topic of Travel and Clothes. The class structure: •At the start of the story we will make our own Mr. Gato paper bag puppet. I recommend you print out the coloring sheet that goes with the story (it will be sent to you when you enroll and posted in the classroom page) or you can draw your own cat! I will send a separate document with all the vocabulary words after the class so you can practice on your own time. •I will read a story I wrote & illustrated in both English and Spanish about a cat named Mr.Gato who has decided to go on vacation to visit his friend in the magical island of Guavaland. We have to help him get ready so he can board a plane to the island. He needs your help to decide what he should bring. •The students will be encouraged repeat the key words from the story and act them out (not required). I will have a puppet to play along with the story. Prior to taking this class I strongly recommend you take my previous class- Spanish Language Immersion Storytelling & Movement Session on Colors and Numbers (listed below). **There will be a small amount of movement in the class so I encourage my students to have plenty of space where they will be participating to follow along with the story. I hope that you consider enrolling your child in my class. It will be a blast!
Learning Goals
The students enrolled will learn to say and understand key words and phrases related to Travel and Clothes that will be highlighted in the story and in the puppet activity.
