In this class we will read a short story in Spanish together. I titled this short story 'La sorpresa del océano' (The ocean's surprise). This is a flex class (meaning there are no live meetings). There will be three interactive presentations in Nearpod per week to maximize the exposure to the language. The first class of every week, we will read a chapter of the book (4 chapters) and we will learn some related grammar and vocabulary. In the second class, we will answer some questions about the chapter and review a verb tense using an interactive presentation. Finally, in the third class of every week, we will review some key grammatical topics such as adjectives and prepositions. This means there will be three classes per week during 4 weeks. Hence, a total of 12 classes. This class will use Nearpod presentation for the listening and interactive presentations and a google presentation with access to vocabulary. Every week you will submit one or more written assignments. All interaction will take place through the Outschool classroom. The class includes interactive games, collaborative boards, polls, and much more. This class will allow you to practice your reading skills in Spanish, learn new vocabulary and grammar, and also interact with other students also learning Spanish through our Collaborative Board activities in Nearpod. We will all participate and contribute to particular topics given each week. You will also submit one or two written assignment in Spanish every week and I will provide feedback and comments. There will also be topics included in the Outschool class during the week to practice Spanish. The class will take place following this format: Week 1 to 4: Monday: Reading of the chapter number 1, learning of vocabulary and related grammar. You will submit one or two writing assignments. Every Monday, I will also provide a link to Nearpod with a short interactive cultural presentation related to the area where the book takes place. Wednesday: There will be a Nearpod presentation with several questions about the chapter we read on Monday. On Wednesday, the student will also receive another link to a presentation to practice a verb tense (topics will include: immediate future, present perfect, formal commands, and the uses of 'to have' in Spanish). Friday: The student will receive one final interactive presentation to review a different grammar topic each week (topics will include: adjectives, prepositions, interrogatives, and difference between 'por' and 'para' in Spanish). *You will be asked to answer questions in the Outschool Classroom during the week. You should also use the Outschool Classroom to ask questions and get to talk to your classmates in Spanish only! The tenses covered in this class include: immediate future, present perfect, formal commands, and uses of 'tener' (to have) in Spanish. Please note: *Students need to have previous knowledge of Spanish before signing for the class. You should be able to conjugate in the present tense. While most of the chapters will be in the present tense, there might be some other tenses. You will find as well reflexive verbs, phrasal verbs and common expressions. *This is a foreign language class. Participation in this class is a necessary element for student success. Please keep that in mind when enrolling.
Learning Goals
The goal is to initiate the students to reading in a foreign language for fun. The will learn new vocabulary and grammar and I hope this little short story encourages to continue to read in Spanish on their own!

I am a Spanish native speaker, but I have also had to master another language. So, I understand how difficult it is to improve your language skills. Through my years teaching Spanish and learning other languages, I have developed several useful tools to help you improve quickly. One of the most important aspects of learning a language is to read in the foreign language. Reading allows the students to learn sentence structure, vocabulary, and grammar. It is a great way to improve a language in an independent way. However, when the students feel overwhelmed about the amount of words they don't understand, they give up. This class intends to address that problem and overcome future fears about reading in a foreign language.
