Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
This ongoing class is designed to help learners become belter Spanish readers, where they not only read fluently but also understand what they read. I use passages aligned to the student's ability and use English as needed to give directions or make clarifications. We will use cognates, identify supporting details, text evidence and context clues to help read and understand the passages. I ask comprehension questions throughout class to ensure the student is understanding the text and always encourage students to ask questions or ask for clarification if something is unclear. I am a native Spanish speaker, my first language is Spanish because both my parents were raised in Mexico. I spoke only Spanish until the age of 5, when I entered public schools in the U.S. As I became proficient in English, I helped translate for my parents. And because my parents only spoke Spanish, I continued to speak Spanish on a daily bases, then, when I became a teacher, I used my Spanish skills to help my ESL students in my classroom. General Format: -Brief introduction, how is your week going, anything you want to share? -Preview Spanish vocabulary -Use student's prior knowledge to make connections to the passage -I will ask the student to read the passage out loud so I can gauge their fluency. -The learner will answer comprehension questions and support their answer using text evidence. -We will discuss the passage in greater detail: identify main idea, supporting details, author's purpose, etc. Week 1: Select Spanish reading passage based on student ability. Preview vocabulary, read passage, answer comprehension questions and talk in depth about the reading. Week 2: Select Spanish reading passage based on student ability. Preview vocabulary, read passage, answer comprehension questions and talk in depth about the reading. Week 3: Select Spanish reading passage based on student ability. Preview vocabulary, read passage, answer comprehension questions and talk in depth about the reading. Week 4: Select Spanish reading passage based on student ability.
