Bienvenidos! In this one time class, learners will go over the sounds in the Spanish alphabet, and then practice sounding out words. Spanish is a phonetic language, so the letters always make the same sounds. This makes learning to sound out unfamiliar words much easier, once you know the basics. Welcome to the basics! We will go over the vowels, the consonants that sound different in Spanish, and the few combos that Spanish letters have. Once we do that, we will start with small syllables, then build words based on those syllables. After spending several years helping teach reading in a school in Guatemala, I learned that there are some really simple tricks to learning to read in Spanish. While this class does not focus on vocabulary, I will tell them the meanings of the words they are learning to pronounce. We will wrap up the class with several activities to practice their new pronunciation abilities. Learners need no prior knowledge of Spanish, but knowing most of their English letter counterparts will make this class much easier for them to make sound comparisons and recognize the sounds they already know. Learners would benefit from having paper and a writing utensil to write down the sounds for reference.
Learning Goals
Students will leave class with all the tools to sound out and pronounce Spanish words.
