The coursework includes: 1) Introducing a different grammar/narrative point; 2) Introducing a specific Hispanic author’s life in context; 3) Reading and discussing works from Hispanic authors; 4) Discovering new vocabulary and grammar within the reading; 5) Writing a response each week and a 300-word final project. Course Outcomes Learners will become more familiar with the following: Grammar Indicative Mood: Simple and compound tenses. Introduction to subjunctive mood Reflexive Verbs Prepositions Use of Impersonal “se” Reading Understand the main idea in a short story or poem. Speaking Capable of asking and answering questions. Express ideas in present, past and future tenses. Hold group discussions with improved fluency. Listening Understand the main idea in discussion and audio formats. Deduce meaning through context. Writing Ability to take notes, Write in present, past and future tense, and Write a 300-word essay. *We will adjust the level as needed based on the level of the learners in class, this could mean we dive deeper into topics or need to take a step back and review some more things before moving on. It is imperative to us that your learner is proficient and that we do not just rush through content just to say we covered it* Week 1: Level testing for listening comprehension, spoken production, and academic writing. & Present tense usage in written practice. Read and assign El principito short writing. Week 2: Present and peer review writing. Review compound simple present. Assign revisions for El principito. Week 3: Revised writing presented. Isabel Allende introduction and reading practice. Week 4: Paragraph writing response to La ciudad de las bestias reading in the present tense. Week 5: Review paragraph writing assignment. The subjunctive mood in music and poetry. Short poem/lyric practice. Week 6: Poem reading presentation. Simple past practice. Introduction to Pablo Neruda, Cancion desesperada. Week 7: Prepositions, reflexive verbs, and the personal se. & Final writing assignment. Week 8: Final writing presentation, peer review, and evaluation.
