In this one-time class, learners will learn Spanish by learning FRUIT names in Spanish through conversation, coloring, and then playing a game with their personalized Loteria (Mexican Bingo) card.
Dr. Reina created these Loteria cards just for Out School learners! Each card includes 8 new FRUITS. Learners will be encouraged to chat with their peers and share their experiences encountering these Spanish words. This is an entry-level Spanish class for all levels of early language learners.
We will begin class with a brief introduction for learners to get to know one another. We will share some info like our age and favorite color or favorite toy. Dr. Reina will translate these words into Spanish as a learning extension. (If a child states they are 5 years old and their favorite color is red, I will restate in English and Spanish. "Brian is five years old. Tiene CINCO años! His favorite color is red! Su color favorito es ROJO!" Next, Dr. Reina will introduce each new card using a picture, and the class will color the cards while we go through each one. After learners finish learning the new words and coloring their cards, we will play a game of Loteria with the class! Instead of yelling out "BINGO" like we do in English, we will yell out "LOTERIA!" This is the traditional way to play.

As a critical pedagogy educator, I believe students learn best when they are having fun when they feel heard, safe, and accepted. Learning a new language can seem hard, but when learners are playing a game and coloring, chatting about their interests, they won't even realize they are already engaged in the learning process. Throughout the class, I will periodically translate words in hear in their conversation as a casual way to get learners comfortable with hearing Spanish words that relate to their own lives and interests. I will offer more classes to build on this one and learners who re-enroll will begin to feel confident in their conversational Spanish skills as well.

Sometimes my classes can go over by a few mins. Learners are welcome to leave as soon as the time is over if they need to go :)

Learning Goals
Students will learn Spanish words through pictures, coloring, memory, and recall. They will gain confidence in their Spanish Language abilities and begin to learn basic words for everyday use. I believe all learning should have a space for student-led focus, interaction, conversation, and a comfort level where students feel ownership of their learning goals. As a critical pedagogy educator, I want to make all the learners who enter my classes feel heard, accepted, and valued. When young students identify learning as fun and safe, they want to come back for more on their terms.

Hello Outschool families! My name is Dr. Reina and I am excited to get to know you! I am a lover of inclusive learning and student-centered pedagogy. On Outschool, I teach a variety of classes including Spanish, social clubs, private tutoring, and even intro-level Women's studies and Latinx studies classes. My Bachelor's and Master's degrees are in Mexican American Studies. I have 18 years of experience working in education at various levels. I have taught Head Start, elementary, middle, and high school learners and I currently teach university students who plan to become K-12 teachers. I earned a doctorate from the University of Minnesota in Interdisciplinary Studies; Development Studies and Social Change with a focus on Women's Studies and Feminist Epistemology. I have a 7-year-old Outschool learner and as a homeschooling, unschooling family, we love learning and spending time outdoors together.

I am a student-centered educator who listens and aims to allow students to feel heard and seen in the classroom. I want all of my students to feel empowered and engaged in every lesson. I believe that students bring important and valuable contributions to the classroom. I aim to empower learner voices in a way that allows them to become confident critical thinkers who can pose questions and engage with their peers in a collaborative learning process. I treat my students with care, kindness and listen with attention because I value the student-teacher, teacher-student relationship.

I love to create student-centered curriculum, so please reach out to suggest a class you would like me to offer your learner! I hope to meet you and your learner soon!
