Hola y bienvenidos to Beginning Spanish: Learn Through Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science! This is a dual-language (English/Spanish) course for beginning Spanish students ready to begin acquiring more vocabulary to describe the world around us. METHODOLOGY: This class is content-based, meaning that our topics and units revolve around the content that is usually taught to students in Kindergarten-1st grade (topics and units material indicated below.) Although Spanish is the primary language of this course (70%+) this is NOT an immersion course. Rather, I utilize 'bridging,' an instructional strategy in bilingual education that first highlights the background knowledge of a learner in their primary language in order to create a "bridge" that helps facilitate connection and understanding of the same material in the new language. Bridging highlights similarities between languages and makes language acquisition more accessible for all levels of learning, particularly in situations where true immersion (all day school, etc) is not possible. STRUCTURE: This course is ongoing and will meet three times per week. Each unit will last nine classes, or three weeks total per unit. Within those nine classes, students will learn learn Spanish vocabulary and phrases and practice them through reading, writing, and speaking about the three content areas (social studies/life topics, math, science.) Learners can miss classes within a unit or not have attended previous units and be able to participate just fine in class! Every class will have a section on Social Studies/Life Topics, Math, and Science (10-5 minutes each, depending on the day of the week) **EXAMPLE WEEK - EVERY 3 WEEKS WE WILL CHANGE UNITS/TOPICS** TUESDAY Greetings Days of the Week / Months of the year -10 min of Social Studies/Life Topics (ex: all about me!) -10 min of Math (ex: addition) -5 min of Science (ex: types of animals) WEDNESDAY Greetings Days of the Week / Months of the year -10 min of Social Studies/Life Topics (ex: all about me!) -10 min of Science (ex: types of animals) -5 min of Math (ex: addition) THURSDAY Greetings Days of the Week / Months of the year -10 min of Math (ex: addition) -10 min of Science (ex: types of animals) -5 min of Social Studies/Life Topics (ex: all about me!) Within each content section, we will learn vocabulary, play mini-games, listen to a story, read together, discuss as a class, write about the material, and do activity sheets "IS MY LEARNER READY FOR THIS COURSE?" 1.This course will best serve learners who ages 5-8 who are learning to read or are early readers. There is a focus on comparing and contrasting the written form of words in Spanish and English, and many activities will include a reading/writing aspect. If your learner is still in the pre-reading phase, they may be better suited for my on-going courses, "Todo Sobre Los Animales / All About Animals" or "Bilingual Story Time," which do not require reading but focus on other literacy skill such as predicting, repeating, and retelling. 2. If your learner reads above a 1st grade level, they will still benefit from this course as they acquire vocabulary and learn to read in Spanish! They will feel confident as they learn in Spanish! **Please feel free to message me if you are unsure which course to take first!** ***ANTICIPATED DATES AND UNITS*** *UNIT 1* Nov 3-5 // Nov 10-12 // Nov 17-19 Social Studies/Life Topics: “All about me!” Science: Types of animals (mammals, reptiles, birds, fish) Math: Skip counting *UNIT 2* Nov 24-25 (no class Thanksgiving) // Dec 1-3 // Dec 8-10 Social Studies/Life Topics: “My hobbies” Science: Desert habitats Math: Skip counting (backwards) *UNIT 3* Dec 15-17 // Dec 22-23 (no class Christmas Eve) // Dec 29-30 Social Studies/Life Topics: People who help / People in our communities Science: Ocean habitats Math: Addition *UNIT 4* Jan 5-7 // Jan 12-14 // Jan 19-21 Social Studies/Life Topics: What makes us diverse?
