Class Experience

This class is perfect for students who are learning Spanish (at home or in an immersion school setting) and are looking for additional ways to practice! My focus is on mixing fun with learning and giving students a safe place to practice! I will speak in Spanish and encourage students to respond in Spanish, prompting and providing words to help students develop expressive language skills. I understand that receptive language skills develop before expressive language skills and work hard to challenge students while finding high-interest topics and areas of interest.

This class will meet twice per week and students can begin and stop their subscription at any time. Topics will be taught IN SPANISH. Students with limited Spanish exposure are encouraged to try, but the class will be taught in Spanish with little English translation.

Class topic examples include:
Photosynthesis
Safari animals
Who was Hellen Keller?
Reading short stories/reading comprehension
The Water Cycle
Dinosaurs
Math problems
All about pets
Who was Benjamin Franklin?
Silly picture speaking prompts

And many many more! We’ll meet weekly and I’ll rotate topics through subject areas - reading/ELA, math, science, general speaking. Students will learn IN SPANISH and practice speaking and reading IN SPANISH. I’ll use on-screen texts and resources to encourage comprehension and vocabulary. I’ll use a 90/10 format where I’m speaking only Spanish (not copying myself in English) and only using English to clarify when I think it is necessary.

I’m Nicole and I taught in the local public school system for several years! I was certified to teach Spanish, English, and Special Education K-12 and taught Spanish levels 1 through AP and English classes in general and self-contained classrooms. I left the public school system to homeschool my three children - ages 7, 10 and 12 - and together we learn and explore! I've traveled to Honduras and to Spain and I love teaching Spanish, language/grammar and culture! I also have extensive experience with special needs and work part time as a family consultant to families with children with Autism in Maryland.

I believe that understanding the mechanics of language is absolutely essential in good writing and in second-language acquisition. I especially enjoy teaching early reading/phonics/phonemic awareness, English grammar and Spanish grammar! I teach Spanish immersion classes where we are constantly laughing and learning and social skills groups where students develop relationships with peers around the world!

I'm happy to schedule one:one classes/tutoring by request. Please message me with questions!
