Class Experience

In this young learners' Spanish course, students will practice Spanish greetings and goodbyes and learn a variety of Spanish survival expressions employing everyday nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Students will be led through 12 unique lessons with images and text and be asked to read and respond in Spanish to practice key concepts and vocabulary. Supporting materials will be shared to the Outschool classroom.

1. There are three interactive-style video-recordings per week given out by the instructor based on TPRS and Pimsleur-type teaching methodologies. The aim of the videos is to provide a wealth of comprehensible input to the students accompanied by texts and open-source images for a rich learning experience. While skill-building occurs during each weekly topic, new topics are started at the beginning of each week with some limited recycling of material. This means that the course does not become progressively more difficult. Students should be prepared to verbally interact with the videos. This is best accomplished with a parent and/or adult for support. Each video is approximately 20 minutes for a total of approximately 240 minutes of virtual live instruction.

2. Students will be expected to post a recording each week of a weekly cumulative activity to share their progress. An activity will be provided each week with supporting instructions to help parents facilitate student learning.

Week 1: "What is it?" and, "It is..." with Everyday Nouns
Week 2: "What do you like?" and "I like," "I don't like," "I like a lot," "I like a little," "I don't like at all," with Everyday Nouns and Activities
Week 3: "Who is it?" with Family, People, and Professions
Week 4: "How many?" 0-10, Colors, and Nature

3. If there is more than one student per class, students are expected to post video or audio responses in Spanish to other students regarding the content question and answers.

All references will be made available to students on the scheduled course start-date and each week thereafter, (e.g., if the course starts on a Monday, materials for each week will go out every Monday).

Students will have direct access to the instructor via Outschool—on both the Classroom page and the Teacher page—should they have any questions. The teacher will respond to questions within 24-48 hours.

Learning Goals

Students will learn immersive-style Spanish through speaking and reading. The strong focus is on asking and answering basic questions about themselves and their immediate surroundings. Additionally, students will demonstrate needs and wants with the extension into cultural tidbits, creative thought, problem solving, and theoretical perspective, i.e., imagination. While grammar is not overtly taught, topics practice over the entire 12-week course includes exposure to:

Subject pronouns
Present Tense Verbs
Hay
Negation
Counting

Nouns, singular and plural
Noun gender

Adjective agreement

I have taught French and Spanish at all levels from middle school to college since 1995. I have designed online language courses since 1999. I believe online learning is an effective way to learn a language, both as a teacher and a learner. While I have designed this course to be a paced course, it offers flexibility to work at a learner's pace within the weeks to accommodate students' learning preferences and schedules.

See below for student responses to the question: "How did your teacher communicate with you and how frequently?"

(Note, student grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors are preserved.)

"My teacher talked to me often, she helped me alot [sic] through out this course. She would keep me updated, give me tips and helped me if i [sic] was stuck, she also would say good morning and things like that, i [sic] know its [sic] not relavant [sic] but i [sic] thought that was really nice."

"She would always end with have a good day and a lot of teachers don't do that."

"YES. She was great. Best teacher as far as communication that I have had while doing online classes."

"She sent us tips and tricks and responded on time to any questions or concerns."

"I would ask her questions about the guided practices and grading. She would update me on assignments I didn't finish."

"She went in depth to answer my questions in a timely manner, and never made me feel like the question was dumb to ask. she [sic] also reached out to me with things i [sic] could to to do better understand the lesson and help my grade."

"This was my first time taking an online course. I was really scared and worried it would be hard but it wasn't. i [sic] rarely ever had technical issues. My teacher helped me and explained every question i [sic] had. My teacher made sure i [sic] was always on task and assisted me with tasks i [sic] should complete. Overall my experience was great , and i [sic] would recommend this class."

"I was able to learn things that were supposed to be covered in [my previous course] in school but my teacher didn't cover it well. The communication between the teacher and students was well oriented and it would be hard to misunderstand the messages she sends. I enjoyed this course!"
