PLEASE NOTE: This content is offered in the new, extended, Elementary Spanish & Conversation 1 class. This class is a continuation of Beginning Spanish and Conversation 1a. Students should have a familiarity with Spanish to include how to introduce oneself, greet others, talk about family, and know the months of the year. This is a literature-based course that will focus on building vocabulary, reading and responding to simple texts, and conversation. Traditional/native stories and poetry, as well as translated stories, are integrated throughout the course. Students will learn Spanish relevant to their lives using literature, songs, and in-class speaking practice and games. Some aspects of grammar will be taught as needed to include verbs such as "estudiar" and "ir." 10-lesson thematic content includes the following: Session 1 – Review of Elementary Spanish 1a material. Intro to school terms; days of the week Session 2 - What do you do at school? School activities Session 3 - What do you do at school? School subjects Session 4 - What do you take to school? There is an emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking about different topics. They will also continue to build upon their reading skills. By the end of class, students will have the tools to talk about their home and school routines and activities. They will complete projects that will be presented in class. Students will also practice reading in Spanish. Some prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary. Basic conversation skills such as how to introduce oneself, tell about oneself (age, birthday), months of the year, numbers to 10, and talk about people in the family, are helpful. I am a longtime homeschooler (over 16 years and counting!), and an experienced, licensed teacher with endorsements in bilingual education and TESOL. I have also earned a Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction in Early Childhood Education (birth through Grade 3).
I have been speaking Spanish for over 25 years, have homeschooled preschool through high school in a bicultural and bilingual home for the past 20 years, and have tutored and taught all ages bilingually in schools and tutoring settings for over 10 years. I have graduated one, and continue to homeschool my other child.
I offer several series of Spanish classes, using familiar translated stories, native Spanish stories, songs, and poems. I teach practical, useable Spanish that can be used right away, and talk about familiar themes interesting to many children.
