https://outschool.com/classes/elementary-spanish-and-conversation-1-5zYhMelm#usWYh7px2U

This course uses stories and songs and to build vocabulary, read and respond to simple texts, and practice basic conversation skills. Students will learn Spanish relevant to their lives using literature, songs, in-class speaking practice and games. Themes include greetings and introductions, home, and other common topics. Some aspects of grammar will be taught as needed, to include "to be" (ser, estar).

Thematic vocabulary and grammar build upon each other each week. There is an emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking about different topics.

By the end of class, students will have the tools to greet, introduce themselves, and talk about themselves and family. They will complete projects that will be presented in the middle and last classes. Students will also be introduced to beginning reading.

In each session, students learn at least one set of conversational questions and answers to practice.

Session 1 - Introduction
Students will learn to say Hello and introduce themselves. They will be introduced to Spanish vowels and using numbers from 0-4 in a simple complete sentence.

Session 2 - Greeting
Students will add to their introductions by greeting someone using common greetings. Reading - consonants are paired with vowels to create syllables, the basis of Spanish reading. Beginning this week, syllable groups will be learned in each class.

Session 3 - Age
Numbers to 10 are practiced. Using numbers, students will learn how to tell someone how old they are.

Session 4 – Months of the Year
Students will review what they have learned up to this point. They will begin to learn the months of the year, beginning with the month they were born, and a simple sentence to say when their birthday is.

Session 5 – About Me – Putting it Together
Students will greet one another, introduce themselves, and tell each other their ages and birthdays. They will ask one another the
questions to solicit answers from their classmates. More months of the year will be introduced.

Session 6 – Dia de Poesia
Students will learn a poem that incorporates reading, and comprehend the meaning based on known vocabulary and context clues. More months of the year will be introduced.

Session 7 – My Family
Students will learn family names, beginning with the members they live and have frequent contact with. Family projects will be explained; projects will be presented in the last class.

Session 8 – My Family
Students will continue learning extended family names, and how to talk about family members. We will also begin talking about pets.

Session 9 – My Family and Pets
Students practice speaking about their families and pets.

Session 10 – My Family and I project - Students will have prepared their family project and present it to the class. They can use as much or as little Spanish as they are comfortable.

Traditional/native stories and poetry, as well as translated stories, are integrated throughout the course.

No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary. 50/50 Spanish/English, according to student ability.

I am a longtime homeschooler (over 16 years and counting!), and an experienced, licensed teacher with endorsements in bilingual education and TESOL. I have also earned a Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction in Early Childhood Education (birth through Grade 3).

I have been speaking Spanish for over 25 years, have homeschooled preschool through high school in a bicultural and bilingual home for the past 20 years, and have tutored and taught all ages bilingually in schools and tutoring settings for over 10 years. I have graduated one, and continue to homeschool my other child.

I offer several series of Spanish classes, using familiar translated stories, native Spanish stories, songs, and poems. I teach practical, useable Spanish that can be used right away, and talk about familiar themes interesting to many children.

I believe children learn through different modalities and integrate various learning methods in the live classes and the materials I post to parents. If there is a class or topic you would like to see covered or your child is interested in (in Spanish), contact me! I do my best to offer a personalized experience.

I also post information about bilingual families and learning a second language on my family language learning page, www.facebook.com/AdelanteSpanishforAll, and author titles on family language learning and language supplements.
