Let's delve into Spanish with inspiration from beautiful, simple, bilingual picture books that focus on beginner-level vocabulary in context! PLEASE NOTE: We will not read the books during class time. Students should obtain and read (or have read to them) their own copy of the short picture book for that week ahead of class. (These books are available from many online and local booksellers, as well as available at many libraries.) Below are the names of the delightful bilingual picture books written by Ginger Foglesong Guy, listed by the week in which we will discuss them and use them as springboards for further fun and practice: Week of June 6 - Week 1 - "Siesta" - Vocabulary focus: Colors Week of June 20 - Week 2 - "Fiesta" - Vocabulary focus: Numbers Week of June 27 - Week 3 - "¡Perros! ¡Perros!/Dogs! Dogs!" - Vocabulary focus: Descriptions and Opposites Week of July 4 - Week 4 - "My Grandma/Mi abuelita" - Vocabulary focus: Travel Week of July 11 - Week 5 - "Bravo" - Vocabulary focus: Looking and discovering In each class meeting, the teacher will foster a welcoming environment to practice hearing and using the Spanish language as we: 1. Summarize the book (which we will have read prior to class) together through simple questions and answers. 2. Use our imaginations to build on the ideas in the book together, as we practice its key phrases in Spanish. We will explore with situations like, "Let's imagine we are going out to take a nap in a tent in the yard like the kids in the book. What should we put in our backpack?" 3. Practice key vocabulary from the book or that pertains to that week's theme through games (for example, memory, bingo, or guessing game). 4. If time permits: Give students an opportunity to discuss their personal experiences with the theme of the book (such as dogs, trips, piñatas, etc.). Note about Spanish levels: This class is designed for beginner to intermediate students, and no prior knowledge of Spanish is required. If you would like a section of this class opened for advanced students only in 95-100% Spanish, the instructor will be happy to discuss it upon request!
