Intermediate Level
This class meets ONCE a week. For extra practice in the SUMMER, I offer the class in a TWICE-a-week format here: https://outschool.com/classes/summer-current-events-club-spanish-reading-and-conversation-twice-a-week-8ONBfxzP?sectionUid=a295d805-33f9-48c4-a9c9-dd3588e6e8fa&showDetails=true Because the class is outgoing, you can join at any time. DESCRIPTION This is an intermediate level class for students who want to practice and improve their Spanish while learning about current events, history, art, technology, geography and cultural events. Ideally, students would have at least three years of Spanish and an interest in reading about current events that are taking place in different places and cultures. Students in immersion, dual or bilingual programs will greatly benefit from the class and keep their language skills fresh. Each week we'll read a published article from the news that has been adapted for intermediate level learners. Each reading will be mapped with important expressions, grammar structures and vocabulary that we'll focus on. After the reading, we'll practice the highlighted content by answering questions related to the reading and using the learned vocabulary in sentences while discussing each topic. At the end of each lesson, we'll do a variety of exercises and play games to reinforce learning. In teams, we'll play hangman, memory, click match, gap-fill and jumble to help retention and promote interaction between all learners.
Learning Goals
(IMPORTANT) I CREATE THE CONTENT WEEKLY, AND I DO NOT REPEAT THE ARTICLES IN ORDER TO KEEP THE DISCUSSIONS FRESH AND CURRENT. We discuss recently published articles that I select, and topics vary based on students level and interest. Students are exposed to history, art, culture, technology, geography and economy content in relation to events that are taking place now.
Some past topics students have learned about and discussed are the following:
RENOIR- A celebration on his birth anniversary.
MADE IN ITALY- How the "Italian sounding" effect is causing Italian brands and government lose money.
NOTRE DAME - The delays on its restoration after the fire.
GOOGLE in AUSTRALIA - The Australian government wants a law that would require Google to pay for the news that appear on the platform.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS - The origin, Benjamin Franklin, the railways, the arguments for and against it.
FUKUSHIMA -The current state of the area in Japan years after the earthquake, the tsunami and the nuclear plant explosion.
MARS- The missions from three different countries that are taking place.
PHILIPPINES- Why the Philippines is not a Spanish speaking country despite having been a Spanish colony.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Illinois Teaching Certificate in Foreign Language
I am a native speaker and certified teacher with a Master in Linguistics and a Master in Spanish Education. I like incorporating current events topics to my classes as they help student learn and improve their foreign language while becoming familiarized with important issues that are happening in the world. Students become aware of current events at the same time that they improve reading and speaking in another language.
