Class Experience

This course is for students who have completed Spanish 1 or the equivalent. This is semester 1 of a 2 semester series with the second semester taking place upon completion of this course.

This course is a total of 47 days, just shy of 16 full weeks.

Welcome to Spanish 2! I am excited that you are interested in continuing on in your Spanish learning! In this course we will review what you have learned and build upon that with more advanced grammar and vocabulary constantly building your ability to use this beautiful language! This course is language-focused which allows us time to learn grammar and vocabulary and immediately put it into written and verbal practice. Each of the 6 units covered in this semester presents new grammar content paired with useful vocabulary. Students learn this grammar through lecture as well as exposure and then together practice it through a variety of interactive activities. Students are formally assessed through tests and quizzes and also through their in-class participation in written and verbal activities. As part of this course we will implement an interactive learning platform called Nearpod in order to allow students to be actively involved in each lesson and to encourage participation and use of the target language. This requires nothing more than a code which students will receive prior to class allowing students to access the activities through a tablet or a web browser.

Points of emphasis throughout the program are:
Vocabulary -- which provides the basic units of communication.
Grammar -- the structure of the language.
Phonetics -- the individual sounds of the letters and their union into words
	                    and sentences.

During class, these three points are combined in fast-paced oral practice through choral repetition, active language drills, individual responses, conversation, and practice activities.

Our class structure will be similar to a traditional classroom structure
This is what students can usually expect in each class:
1. Conversation practice -- we will always start by using Spanish together!
2. Vocabulary Review (practice for pronunciation) + activity to reinforce vocabulary
3. Review/ homework review
4. Lecture / rule introduction
5. Application of new rule through reading, writing, speaking
6. Verbal activities to reinforce using Spanish in conversation

For the class and unit break down please see the syllabus.

There will be weekly vocabulary quizzes and each unit will end with an assessment. (Usually written, but there may be oral parts at times) I will remain in communication with student and parent about the student's progress and where they may need more support. Students will receive a progress report mid-way through each semester.

The grading scale will be as follows:
30% in class participation
30% unit tests
20% vocabulary quizzes
20% homework

My desire is to build on what your student has already learned and help them better use and understand the Spanish language. I know there are often things that come up that change a student's plan in their studies.

This course is a natural follow-up to my Spanish 1 course. If your child has taken Spanish 1 already from a different teacher an entrance exam may be necessary to ensure it is the right fit for their level.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions!

Important Notes for Enrolled Students:

-The minimum number of students to hold class is 5 students. If this is not met the course may need to be cancelled.

-Please take note of all dates for our semester, making note of holiday breaks.

-If a class would need to be cancelled by the teacher a make-up class will be scheduled or an additional date will be added at the end of the semester course to make up for the missed class.

-If a student needs to miss class for any reason they will be responsible to watch the recording to get any information they missed and will still be responsible for homework / in-class assignments.

-Behavior during class is expected to be respectful and appropriate at all times. The class is a safe environment for students to interact with one another and learn a new language. If students are not being respectful or kind the teacher will assess on a case-by-case basis and the student may be removed the zoom meeting and possibly the course.
Learning Goals
Students will grow in their ability to understand, speak and read in Spanish. This course is meant to build confidence and ability in the use of a second language.
