❝To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.❞ – Chinese Proverb Spanish 1: Year 1 is designed so that each lesson (and each month) builds on the previous lesson/month with a mixture of review, practice, and new content. The intention of a cohort design is that students will build familiarity and trust which typically enhances their willingness to speak a new language. Cohorts run for 6 months at a time. There will be three cohorts beginning in January: Mon/Wed at 6am pdt and 7am pdt, and Tue/Thur at 6am pdt. These cohorts will run January-June 2023. **Prerequisites** ~A desire to speak Spanish. **This class requires the purchase of a book** https://www.amazon.com/Espa%C3%B1ol-Amigos-Approach-Learning-Conversational/dp/1535250828/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1534438120&sr=8-1&keywords=espanol+con+amigos The duration of Spanish 1: Year 1 covers chapters 1-9 of "Español Con Amigos": December: Chapter 1: Greetings: we will learn expressions to say hello and goodbye, how to make introductions, and expressions of courtesy Chapter 2: Using the verb "Ser": we will talk about where we you from, what we are like, and professions January: Chapter 3: The ABC's of Spanish: we will briefly cover the letters of the alphabet, focusing on proper pronunciation. For example, the letter g makes two different sounds (similar to English) depending on which vowel follows it . Chapter 4: Likes and Dislikes: we will learn how to conjugate the verb gustar (to like) and increase our vocabulary of verbs, sports, and nouns. Students will practice asking what someone likes and telling about something they like. February: Chapter 5: Articles and Nouns: in Spanish, nouns have a "gender" and use an article (el/la, los/las). We will continue to increase our vocabulary of nouns and practice using the correct article. March: Chapter 6: Adjectives: we will add colors and antonyms April: Chapter 7: Expressing Possession: we will learn possessive adjectives, learning how to communicate who something belongs to. May: Chapter 8: Numbers, including how to ask how much something costs. Chapter 9: Days of the Week, Date and Months, and Time: students will learn how to talk about the days of the weeks, months, ask what time it is and respond, and use this information to talk about schedules and what time something occurs. This class includes weekly homework (typically twice per week--after each class). Students will be expected to do homework each week in order to continue the development of their language skills outside of class. This will also help them come to class prepared for more conversation during class. Classes consist of explicit vocabulary development, grammar instruction, conversation and application of the skills covered in the lesson/chapter. If you have questions, please message me. I am happy to answer any questions you might have.

Master's Degree from Willamette University
During my time as a public school teacher, I was a dual language immersion teacher and a language acquisition specialist. My focus for this series of classes is on students learning how to SPEAK Spanish, with proper supports. Therefore, I have designed my classes to be as interactive as possible to help students speak as much Spanish as possible during class.
