Bienvenidos a Español 1! In this class, students will use the Realidades text (used in school districts around the US). I will pull resources from several texts/sources to give students a well-rounded and thorough foundation in Spanish, but students are encouraged to purchase the Realidades workbook to practice outside of class time. This is a semester 1: Chapters 1 through 4 A&B class. Semester 2 will run at the same time in the spring and cover Chapters 5 through 9 A&B. Middle school students who wish to take this class for Spanish exposure are welcomed. High school students looking for a Spanish credit are encouraged. Students will be assigned practice/homework assignments to be graded. A final course grade can be provided upon request. Each week will cover a new chapter (ex: Chapter 1A on Tuesday/Thursday of week 1 and Chapter 1B on Tuesday/Thursday of week 2). We will move quickly but I will monitor students and be available "after class" if anyone has a question or needs further explanation. Topics will include: (order subject to change slightly depending on students) Weeks 1 & 2: Introductions/"Para Empezar" Weeks 3 & 4: Chapter 1 A/B Weeks 5 & 6: Chapter 2 A/B Weeks 7 & 8: Chapter 3 A/B Weeks 9 & 10: Chapter 4 A/B Weeks 11 & 12: writing and speaking practice Weeks 13 & 14: Review and final assessment Each week will primarily focus on grammar concepts with vocabulary memorization/practice in between meetings. Students will have opportunities to speak/listen to pronunciation and explore sentence structure through writing and speaking. I will utilize both English and Spanish throughout the lessons and students will gain a greater understanding of language/parts of speech in both English and Spanish. At the end of this semester course, students will be prepared to continue learning in the second half of the Realidades 1 text in spring 2024.
Learning Goals
Older learners benefit from direct instruction (as opposed to immersion instruction exclusively) and strengthen Spanish AND English grammar and usage by exploring the concepts explicitly. I want students to have a solid foundation in the grammatical concepts in Spanish so they build confidence in using what they are learning!

External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from College of Notre Dame of Maryland
Learning language is not easy! Babies start hearing language in the womb and listen to language around them for almost 2 years before they begin speaking. Second language learners often do not have this exposure and experience. I build bridges and connections for students to help them see how Spanish and English are the same (or different!) and as a result, students feel more confident and learn more!
