Bienvenidos a la clase de Español 1! This class is for upper elementary and middle-school aged students between the ages of 10 - 13.

What will students learn:
Students will learn the basics for reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish. We will learn frequently used verb conjugations and vocabulary as well as the culture from various Spanish-speaking countries.

Background Knowledge:
None is required. However, it is helpful for students to have a strong background in English grammar/writing/reading!

Standards:
This class is based on ACTFL's world readiness standards for learning languages following the 5 C's -
1. Communication -interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.
2. Cultures - relating to cultural practices and products.
3. Connections - expanding previous knowledge and developing diverse perspectives
4. Comparisons - language and cultural
5. Communities - school and global, life-long learners
To learn more about these standards, follow this link: https://www.actfl.org/publications/all/world-readiness-standards-learning-languages/standards-summary

Goals for communication:
Based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines this class aims to develop students' speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills in Spanish to a Novice-Low level by the end of the course.
To learn more about these proficiency guidelines, follow this link: https://www.actfl.org/publications/guidelines-and-manuals/actfl-proficiency-guidelines-2012/english

How will students learn:
-My teaching style is interactive and authentic. I want students to improve communication skills by simulating real-life experiences!
-We will meet once a week in class to practice our interpersonal skills. Students can be expected to spend 1-3 hours per week outside of class doing readings/writings/presentations/responding to discussions/etc.
-This class will also use a flipped model classroom, meaning I will post video recordings introducing new topics and information that students will need to view prior to class time. This will allow us to maximize our meeting time for interacting instead of lecturing :)

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I first began studying Spanish as an adolescent and had the opportunity to host multiple Spanish exchange students in high school which gave me the opportunity to get to travel to Spain to live with one of my exchange student's family during the summer. I continued studying Spanish in high school and college, where I spent a semester studying in Sevilla, Spain. I lived with a host family and spoke Spanish every single day to the point of starting to dream in Spanish! I graduated with a B.A. in Spanish and Education and a minor in Psychology. I have since traveled to a number of other countries, including Mexico and Guatemala.

I am fluent in Spanish and have also taught Spanish in both a large, public high school and small k-12 charter school. I have also tutored students in Spanish and love using the language at every opportunity!

I have a deep passion for students to develop personal connections with people from other countries and cultures. I desire for students to more richly experience the world because of their multi-cultural perspectives. Because of this, I will provide my students with experiences that are as authentic as possible in order to create realistic and engaging language practice. We will use the language, not just learn about it. I intend to prepare students for real-life experiences and will do everything I can to help them accomplish their Spanish-speaking goals.
