Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Welcome to "Space & Planet Science" - a weekly class, which focuses on the Earth Science of the planets in our solar system and exoplanets in other solar systems and what this tell us about our own planet Earth. We also cover basic astronomy and how we classify stars and galaxies and hwo we know the Universe is expanding, We talk about all the natural proccesses that form these planets and some of the most dramatic physical forces in the Solar System, with the aim of making learning fun and exhilarating. I think making learning enjoyable and bringing science to life is the best way to get kids engaged and learning without realising it. Each class will cover a stand alone topic and students can join or leave anytime.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬
We will focus on all parts of the Earth Science school curriculum, with a new theme and/or planet being introduced each week. We cover all the topics I cover in my Exciting Earth Science series but spend more time to explore each topic in more detail as applied to planets. All topics covered are an important part of any child's education in Geology, Meteorology, Weathering, Oceonography and Astronomy.

▬▬▬▬▬ TOPICS COVERED ▬▬▬▬▬
Other dates are available and can be requested.

1) Basic Astronomy
2) Further Astronomy
3) Tour of the Solar System
4) Venus & the Moon
5) Mars
6) Moons of Jupiter and Mars
7) Exoplanets
8) Stars, Galaxies and the Universe

Once the students have done each topic then I will start fresh and begin repeating topics unless the students request covering other topics.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS STYLE ▬▬▬▬▬
I use PowerPoint presentations for all my classes, so I can mix text and multimedia and make the class more interesting. These classed will be run using an "intro-discussion-repeat" format. This means I will take a few minutes to introduce a topic, using images or videos wherever appropriate in order to bring the subject alive. Then we will pause to take questions and make sure everyone is keeping up. Then we'll move on to the next exciting sub-topic and supporting material, and then pause for questions after that one too. This means that you can enjoy the class however you like. Speak up and get involved in questions, or just listen and enjoy with no pressure. These subjects are cherry picked to choose the most interesting, accessible and relevant Earth Science subjects for kids, so they learn to enjoy exploring the world around them. Hopefully inspiring them to learn more about Geology, Earth Science and Science in general.
Learning Goals
To discover and learn without realising it, because you are having fun! By the end of this course students will be know in depth details of most Earth Science curriculums as applied to to different types of planets.

Learning Needs
Structured lecture classes, so participation optional, relieves anxiety Mixed media slides for different learning styles Engaging topics keeps attention Slides can be seen before class Assessment in different formats on request
Parental Guidance
Some classes talks about Global Warming and Climate Change causing more frequent natural disasters. It also talks about mass extinctions including the possibility of humans causing one now (including ourselves) and has some drawn images of animals dying to become fossils. We also talk about the end of the Earth and the Universe. It is delivered in a upbeat manner with positive solutions (eg: switching to renewable energy), but the more sensative students may find these topics distressing.
