US Grade 5 - 8
Astronomy has always been an important part of human history, from the Ancient Greeks and Mayan astronomers, to Nicolaus Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, Galileo, Isaac Newton, and even to Albert Einstein. Astronomy has played a mysterious, yet vital role in our world. After all, as humans, we have an innate desire to be explorers and space is, perhaps, one of the most thrilling areas of unimaginable and untapped exploration and discovery. As many nations have been delving deeper and deeper into their space programs, pushing the limits of human interaction with our solar surroundings and the cosmos, it is vital to instill a love of learning about space into the minds of the next generation. This class will do so by focusing on how we look into space using Telescopes, introducing Star Charts, and finding Constellations on those charts. 4-Week Schedule of Learning is as follows: Week 1: Let’s be Astronomers: History of Telescopes; Who invented the telescope; Which astronomers are famous because of their use of the telescope Week 2: Let's be Astronomers: What are the types of telescopes; What are the parts of a basic telescope; How We Use Them; What we see with a telescope Week 3: Let’s be Astronomers: What are Constellations & Star Charts; Using Star Charts & Identifying the 5 largest Constellations Week 4: Let’s be Astronomers: Complete discussion of star charts & constellations & play a review game Teacher will use a combination of teaching strategies and methodologies, using Game-based and Visual Learning, Inquiry-based Learning, slide presentations, videos, and discussions. Teacher will present the information in a fun, informative manner & then students and teacher will discuss each topic, while drawing conclusions, making comparisons, identifying the key information, and learning all about telescopes, star charts, and the constellations. *No prior knowledge is necessary.
Learning Goals
This Space Adventure is crammed-packed with information and fun!
Students will Explore telescopes learning:
1. Who invented the telescope
2. How telescopes work
3. Types of telescopes
4. What we can see with a telescope
Then we will dive into Star Charts & discover:
5. What are star charts
6. What are Constellations
7. Identify the 5 largest constellations using star charts.

Parental Guidance
Each learner will need their cameras turned on for this class. Parents may need to assist their child in learning how to "mute & unmute" themselves, as teacher will mute students at times during the "teaching" portion of our class & then ask them to "unmute" to answer questions & interact with the other learners during the interactive, conversational, and review portion of our class. This allows each learner the opportunity to hear what is taught, while still allowing for questions, interaction and such.
Any YouTube videos, or portions of videos, shown during class will be linked in the Outschool Classroom so learners & their families may watch them after class, as desired.
Supply List
Any learning materials needed will be available for download in the Outschool classroom.

Missouri Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education
I have always had a love of space, from the moment my grandpa, an amateur astronomer, let me look through the 10-foot telescope he built all by himself, to watching shuttles & satellites lift into the sky, and watching some fall back to the earth. I have spotted some of the largest dust storms to hit Mars, and have enjoyed looking at the various craters on our Moon and seeing the rings around Saturn, all from my own backyard in Missouri & while using telescopes, including the ones my grandpa & I built together! I have never ceased my exploration and search, looking to the skies to watch for eclipses, comets, and so much more! My love of all things Space has only increased with time, and I feel it is the next great wave of the future!
As a teacher with three different degrees, including a Master’s Degree in Teaching, I have taken several science courses, including those dealing with Astronomy. I also have over 30 years of experience working with children of various ages, teaching a variety of topics, including Astronomy, Arts & Crafts, Music, Business, Computers and more! I love to share my knowledge with the next generation as I hope to instill the awe-inspiring beauty the Unknown Universe holds, as well as encourage students to dream and believe! I hope to see you in class as we take on this Amazing Space Mission!
