Space Mission 1: Intro to Astronauts & Space Travel
Class experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Space has always held a fascination for humans. In the 1940's and 1950's we saw a dramatic increase in that interest, which brought about the first Space Race. Fast-forward 50 to 60 years, and humans continue to press onward, desiring to travel further into space. Where might we go next? Who are these people who would dare to travel the cosmos? How do they train? What types of spacecraft have humans developed over this time span? These are just some of the questions we will be answering...
This Space Adventure is crammed-packed with information and fun! Students will learn about Astronauts and how they train; Categorize the main Types of Spacecraft sent into space by humans; Discuss where Astronauts might go in the future; take their fellow classmates on a trip to some place within our Solar System during our Mission to Space project. 1. Discuss, Define & Discover: What is an Astronaut? What do they do? Where have they traveled to in Space? How do they Train? 2. Discuss & Categorize the Main Types of Spacecraft sent into space by humans. 3. Discover, Discuss & Recognize Things Orbiting Earth (An in-depth look into The International Space Station, Satellites & More) 4. Present a planet or moon they would like to travel to with the class during our Space Mission Project.
I have always had a love of space, from the moment my grandpa, an amateur astronomer, let me look through the 10-foot telescope he built all by himself, to watching shuttles & satellites lift into the sky, and watching some fall back to the earth. I have spotted some of the largest dust storms to hit Mars, and have enjoyed looking at the various craters on our Moon and seeing the rings around Saturn, all from my own backyard in Missouri & while using telescopes, including the ones my grandpa & I built together! I have never ceased my exploration and search, looking to the skies to watch for eclipses, comets, and so much more! My love of all things Space has only increased with time, and I feel it is the next great wave of the future! As a teacher with three different degrees, including a Master’s Degree in Teaching, I have taken several science courses, including those dealing with Astronomy. I also have over 30 years of experience working with children of various ages, teaching a variety of topics, including Astronomy, Arts & Crafts, Music, Business, Computers and more! I love to share my knowledge with the next generation as I hope to instill the awe-inspiring beauty the Unknown Universe holds, as well as encourage students to dream and believe! I hope to see you in class as we take on this Amazing Space Mission!

Any learning materials needed will be available for download in the Outschool classroom.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Each learner will need their cameras turned on for this class. Parents may need to assist their child in learning how to "mute & unmute" themselves, as teacher will mute students at times during the "teaching" portion of our class & then ask them to "unmute" to answer questions & interact with the other learners during the interactive, conversational, and review portion of our class. This allows each learner the opportunity to hear what is taught, while still allowing for questions, interaction and such. Any YouTube videos, or portions of videos, shown during class will be linked in the Outschool Classroom so learners & their families may watch them after class, as desired.
