US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
**Please Note: This is a self-paced course, allowing your learner to watch the videos, practice the skills, and play the games when it is convenient for you. There are no live meetings for this course, but I will be available with tips, tricks, and advice to help your learner succeed.** This fun, high energy, game-based class will help students confident with reading CVC words take the next step. We will work together over 8 sessions to introduce digraphs (SH, CH, TH, and WH), consonant blends (bl-, dr-, etc), and long vowels, first with "magic e," and then an introduction to vowel teams. In addition, we will look at how "bossy r" can change the short sound of vowels in words like shark and hurt. This self-paced class does not include live meetings. Instead, I will upload two videos each week, approximately 10-15 minutes long. I will also include links to on-line word sorts, games, and activities from wordwall.net (games are developed on wordwall.net, but hosted on genial.ly to comply with COPPA). I will send hands-on materials to help your learner practice blending, segmenting, and creating words based on the scheduled skill. I firmly believe that parents are a learner's first and best teacher. I like to create engaging and creative materials to help parents find fun ways to help reading come alive for little learners. Week 1 (classes 1 and 2): Quick review of CVC words, followed by the introduction of the common digraphs ch, sh, th, and wh. We will use these digraphs to increase the number of words we can easily decode. Week 2 (classes 3 and 4): We will introduce common consonant blends at both the beginning and end of words (bl, br, cl, dr, fr, fl, gr, pr, sl, sp, etc). We will use on- and off-line games to practice this new skill, as well as a strategy I call "build it backwards." . Week 3 (classes 5 and 6): Week 3 will introduce the long vowel sounds supported by "magic e." Week 4 (classes 7 and 8): This week will introduce the "bossy r" sounds, as well as a few vowel teams, another way to make vowels say their long sounds. Learners are invited to post videos of their practices, ask for tips and tricks if you need help, and message the teacher for any help you may need! I will provide physical word sorts and other activities, and learners can upload photos of their completed activities to share. This class is best for learners who are comfortable reading CVC words and who read those words accurately at least 80% of the time. Supplementary material will be provided at no extra cost each week to help students learn in class and at home.
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to read words with blends, digraphs, "magic e," and begin to understand r-controlled vowels and vowel teams.
