Class Experience

There is no need for a separate musical instrument for these classes, the only instrument required is your voice! With the Loving guidance of Mrs. H, a healthy approach to singing is explored through storytelling, songs, movement, art, and more! A gentle and holistic approach to music literacy, The Magical Language of Music courses are not one in which ideas are committed to memory... they are learned by Heart.

In this session, students will be introduced to the foundations of an age-appropriate approach to vocal pedagogy while learning the folk songs from the upcoming Soulful Solfège class. To embrace the learners who are new to the Magical Language of Music classes, this class will also review some of the foundational musical concepts that were covered in the Foundations of Music classes. (For returning learners, please note that this will be review. 😊)

Class meetings begin with actively listening to pieces of music that demonstrate healthy singing. Students will discuss the pieces of music, and create art based on these listening examples. Following the active listening activity, each class meeting will alternate between presentation of a new concept in vocal technique and an introduction to a foundational music concept, all of which is then put into practice through the singing of simple folk songs, and a healthy dose of movement and dancing!

Inspired by blending the Kodály approach to music education and the Waldorf approach to literacy, the holistic methods in the Magical Language of Music classes provide students with an enjoyable experience that allows them to conceptualize musical concepts in an imaginative way.

Learning Goals

This class serves as a preparatory class for Soulful Solfège parts 1 and 2. Students will learn the music for the upcoming Soulful Solfège class together and touch on foundational music concepts, while exploring the mechanics of their own unique voice.

To reinforce some of the foundational music concepts, there will be two recommended culinary extension activities to be completed outside of class time. These activities are entirely optional, but are highly recommended to reinforce the musical ideas in a fun and unconventional way!

Parental Guidance
Students will need some help in the kitchen for the optional culinary activities outside of class. While these activities are optional, they are a fun way to reinforce the concept from our class, and even give wee folk and grown folk a chance to bond with each other through the process.
Supply List
Along with the Soulful Solfège curriculum program (which includes a digital copy of the curriculum guide, song recordings, recipes, additional instructional videos, and printable files) students will need the following supplies for the accompanying art projects:

* Main Lesson Book (A sketchbook works great, or loose papers that can be then bound when completed)
* Good quality crayons or other colorful drawing medium

Also recommended (but not required) is the novella, The Kingdom of Solfeggio. A link to purchase this book is found on the website for Legends of the Staff of Musique.

The ingredients for the optional culinary extension activities will be provided in class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching music to children and adults alike for a very long time. Somewhere along the way, many have lost the belief that everyday people are capable of beautiful music-making with each other. But music is not solely a performance art... it is a form of communication in which humans have been participating for thousands of years. Along with establishing a joyful foundation in music literacy for children, it is my hope that these classes will encourage children to share their love of music-making with each other, and even the grown-ups in their lives. Let us sing together!
