What is it about the sonnet? Why does this poetic form have an enduring legacy? Can anything meaningful be expressed in only fourteen lines? Sonnets are simple, yet powerful, making them a fantastic gateway for blossoming poetry enthusiasm. Throughout this course, we will discuss the form, the prosody, and the literary devices that go into the creation of a sonnet. Our understanding of what makes a sonnet a sonnet will help us to better approach and appreciate other forms of poetry as...
Students will learn how to identify and create sonnets. They will learn poetic concepts such as form, stanzas, prosody, and meter. Students will also gain a greater familiarity with famous names and works within English literature.
I enjoy teaching with energy and a sense of humor. I teach essay and literature classes on Outschool. Before that, I spent some time as a snowboarding instructor at Park City Mountain Resort. I get a kick out of teaching and I love my students. I work my tail off to help them achieve their goal, whether it is writing an essay, studying literature, or snowboarding. I studied English at Brigham Young University and received my Bachelors of Arts in April 2011. While studying, I spent a semester in Europe, surveying art at The British Museum, The Louvre, The Musee D'Orsay and many other world renowned museums. I love the humanities, especially the English language!
Throughout class I ask that learners share sonnets whether during class time or on the Classroom page. Learners will also create their own sonnets to be shared in our final class together.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
