Description
Class Experience
Each week, we will create our own song ideas in a fun, interactive workshop. Learners will follow a new prompt each week that will emphasize imagination and word play. We'll start with a writing exercise in response to our prompt, thinking about rhyme and rhythm, but not too strictly. Then we'll share our favorite images, language and concepts from what we've just written and discuss how to mold them into the building blocks of our songs: lines, choruses and verses. Then we'll be able to...
Students will come away with a better understanding of songwriting, and the inspiration to continue opening their imaginations. Each week, we will leave the class with a solid new work begun, that we can continue molding as we like.
As this is an ongoing class and students are welcome to join any time, there will be no homework required from class to class. But like any skill, the more you practice, the more you'll get out of what you've learned. My goal is to make the lessons fun and instructive so students will want to continue working on their songs and playing with new ideas throughout the week.
Students should arrive to class with a way to compose their ideas, either with pen/pencil on paper or on a computer or other device. Musical instruments are not required, but welcome if a student would like to write their songs with the accompaniment of a guitar, ukulele, piano, etc.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
