45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Each week, we will create our own song ideas in a fun, interactive workshop. Learners will follow a new prompt each week that will emphasize imagination and word play. We'll start with a writing exercise in response to our prompt, thinking about rhyme and rhythm, but not too strictly. Then we'll share our favorite images, language and concepts from what we've just written and discuss how to mold them into the building blocks of our songs: lines, choruses and verses. Then we'll be able to take away what we've begun to create to revise and sculpt into our own completed masterpieces! No songwriting experience is necessary for this class, nor is it required that learners play a musical instrument or read music. Since it is designed to be a generative exercise, students of all levels can participate together. When it comes to using our imaginations, we can all learn from each other because everyone has a unique way of looking at and thinking about things. Learners who are new to songwriting can learn skills from those who have written songs before, and more seasoned students can benefit from a fresh perspective. Week of 4/25 - Creative Prompt 1 Week of 5/2 - Creative Prompt 2 Week of 5/9 - Creative Prompt 3 Week of 5/16 - Creative Prompt 4 Note that at any given time I may have more than one section of this class running. Students are welcome to sign up for more than one. They may occasionally have more than one session with the same prompt, but they can approach it in a completely different way and still get as much, if not more, of the benefit of the workshop by doing so.
Learning Goals
Students will come away with a better understanding of songwriting, and the inspiration to continue opening their imaginations. Each week, we will leave the class with a solid new work begun, that we can continue molding as we like.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I've been playing the guitar since I was 11 years old and I'm still as excited to pick up my guitar every day now as I was then.
My brother and I have a band playing songs we write about the Harry Potter stories, which has led to the opportunity to tour the country multiple times playing at hundreds of libraries and other all-ages community venues. While doing that, I've continued writing and releasing solo music, including an album of songs I wrote about Star Wars!
I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm with you and taking your playing and knowledge to the next level, whether you're just beginning or you have some skills and are ready to learn some new tricks.
