This class is an independent study class where I either will teach students everything they need to know to learn how to write a song, or I work with students on existing original songs to develop them further. There will be a heavy digital component to this course so students will need access to a music making program in order to complete the course. What will be taught? How to organize and create melodies, harmonies and accompaniment in order to write an original song. How to develop the original song and expand the piece musically. How to record and fill out the original song on a music computer program (Garageband, Protools, audacity, etc.) What topics will be covered? Song Forms Lyric Writing Computer Program training Melody, harmony and accompaniment creation Studio Recording How is the class structured? This is an independent asynchronous class and is appropriate for students 12 or older who are serious about creating. The pacing of the class will depend on how motivated and dedicated your student is. The class is flexible based on the students’ pace and experience. Though there will be weekly lessons about the various elements of songwriting and music recording, the additional lessons will focus on current progress and problem areas. How will it be taught? There are two models for this class. Model 1 is for brand new aspiring songwriters who have never written a song and want to learn how. Those students will have a slower pace and will create a basic simple song. Model 2 is for experienced musicians who have a basic outline or rough drafts of songs and are seeking to develop and record it. Those students will have more advanced instruction and will focus on building rather than learning basics. What's the teaching style? Flexible. Every student comes from a different walk of life and has a certain level of experience and natural talent. The level your student will be in will be determined in the first few weeks of class and will take into account any learning disabilities or neurodivergence that could affect cognition and will shape the style. Each student will be placed in a level tailored specifically to them. How much will learners get to interact? The class will be monitored all throughout. In addition to the weekly materials and feedback there will also be daily check ins with each student and all students will have the access to send me video progress reports and ask me any questions they might have.

Your student will need to have access to a music recording program. Macs and IOS systems have the app Garageband that is free and where I will model the skills. You may choose to purchase a more advanced program like Protools if desired, but the instruction won’t be as accurate.
