Songwriting 101c: Writing Your Own Songs

In this eight week course, students will practice combining music theory with lyric writing to compose their own songs.

Individual homework will be assigned each week to reinforce in-class learning and help the instructor gauge students' strengths and areas needing more practice.

Students will be asked to spend approximately 10 minutes per day writing in a songwriting journal (notebook/composition book) and approximately 1-2 hours per week on other class work. This is all that will be required but students are welcome to write more if they'd like to!

Students will receive a letter grade and written report at the end of each songwriting course completed. (There are three courses in the Songwriting 101 Series. Classes will be offered individually but should all be completed to understand all of the components of basic songwriting.)

1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.

At times, I will play songs that demonstrate methods the students will be using in their writing assignments. I always avoid controversial, profane, or otherwise offensive lyrics.
