In this winter camp poetry class, students will learn about several poetic devices, how to identify them, why a writer might choose to use them, and how the use of these devices can enhance poetry and music. We will listen to the following songs, look at the lyrics, and find & discuss the poetic devices (such as alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia, anaphora, simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, etc.) contained in each: Day 1: Frosty the Snowman, Silver Bells Day 2: Dreidel Song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town Day 3: Light One Candle, Kwanzaa Day 4: Solstice Evergreen, Let It Snow We will open each class by listening to holiday songs. We will then look at the lyrics and identify and discuss the poetic devices found in each song. I will use video clips and slides so we can listen to each song and read the lyrics together. Students will be given many opportunities to interact with me and with other students. I encourage student participation. I create an environment in my classes that is conducive and open to student input. I enjoy having discussions with students and guiding them as they seek knowledge. I want to empower students to become lifelong learners. There is no prior knowledge required for this class.
Learning Goals
Students will gain an understanding of poetic devices and learn how to identify them in both poetry and song lyrics.

I teach Literature, Writing, Poetry, Mythology, and Folklore classes for Middle and High School. I also teach a small selection of classes for elementary-aged students.
I have a BS in Education and a MA in English. I taught in the public school system for seven years. After having my third child, I chose not to return to my teaching position. This decision is what put us on the path toward homeschooling. I began homeschooling in 2006, and my last homeschooled child graduated in May 2021. My youngest child attends a local school designed for neurodivergent and disabled students.
I am the author of the book Mountains and Melancholy: A Collection of Poetry. I am also a former author of one of the health blogs at HealthyPlace.com. I am a teacher member of the Folger Shakespeare Library.
I see myself as a partner in the student's learning process. I believe in student/teacher collaboration. I desire to ignite a fire within students so that they yearn for more rather than try to stuff them with facts they will forget the minute they walk out the door or turn off the computer. I believe learning is a lifelong adventure, and I teach in a way that reflects this belief. I am committed to providing a safe and inclusive space where every learner feels welcomed and valued.
I have one dog and one cat. My dog is named after a Lord of the Rings character: Gandalf. My cat's name is Freyr (like the Norse god.) I love fall and Halloween, and all the things that come with them: cool temperatures, crisp air, vibrantly colored leaves, pumpkin spice, warm cider, dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating, and decorating my house. I even have a Halloween tree. I am usually seen with coffee in one hand and a book in the other. Now you know a bit about me. I look forward to meeting you in one of my classes soon.
