US Grade 4 - 7
Students will help create adventures for a role-playing game that allows them to experience various parts of Greek Mythology as a young hero/heroine. We will spend the first class learning about how to create an adventure, class 2 will be creating a character, and then the next 3 classes will be participating in the adventures created by the heroes in pairs. Class #1: First, we will choose the overall mission and theme of the adventure. We will sketch out what is going to happen in each of the 3 adventures without going into detail. Then, we will assign the 3 adventures to partners to write. I will check on students during this planning time in their different break out rooms. I will offer support, advice, and pose questions to help with their creation. As a group, students will choose their favorite god/goddess as a patron choice for the characters. Finally, they will decide the special starting items to be given to the characters. Class #2: During this class, everyone will make a new character to use during these adventures. We will make the characters based off of the rules already set in the adventure and the different things chosen by the students in previous classes. I will do a final check on each pair and how their adventure is going. Class #3,4,& 5: The heroes will participate in 2 adventures written by the other learners and run 1 adventure with a partner that they have written together. I will participate in all of their adventures and will be there for support and clarification during each class. This is a role-playing game with some similarities in format to other role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. I have chosen to do it in a much more simplified format so that the class would still be focused on gaining more knowledge in Greek Mythology. If you have done any of the other mythology role playing adventures, you will want to print new copies of the character sheets attached under the welcome on the classroom page. You will also want to print out the Item and Creature List and Adventure Planner.
Learning Goals
The goal of our lesson is to experience some of the adventures that happen in Greek Mythology. If the student has knowledge of Greek Mythology, the learner will be able to use that knowledge to create adventures for others to participate in. If the student has not read Greek Mythology, they will encounter new monsters, gods/goddesses, and places when adventuring. Also, they will explore in depth the topic of their adventures for greater understanding. Every student will receive all the information they need to create the adventure they desire.
