Song-Writing for Young Musicians - Part 3
Class experience
This in-depth, hands-on class explores an easy song-writing process for young beginner musicians of any instrument. First, we will review melody-making strategies students learned in the Part 1 class and my guidelines for harmonizing using chords learned in the Part 2 class. Students will then create several song melodies using larger song forms and experiment with various ways to express chord using rhythm patterns. Then we will experiment with writing songs starting from chord progressions...
Students will: * practice reading & writing sheet music on the treble and bass staff * be able to use Noteflight to write sheet music * create long-form songs (32m+) * write songs motive-first, chords-first, lyrics-first * improvise a melody
As a teacher with over twenty years of experience, I have been running my own piano studio full-time for the last decade. I started learning music in piano lessons when I was four-years-old and am currently teaching my 15th academic year as a piano teacher. I also am a former public school art teacher, university adjunct professor, swim instructor, dance teacher, and math tutor.
Homework Offered
Students will be expected to play their instrument to practice the song/s they write in class for 15 minutes daily (or every other day!), so they are familiar enough to play the song in class. As the songs increase in length, students may need to spend time outside of class to finish writing.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Students will be creating their final work in Noteflight, an external internet app for music composition. Noteflight helps students generate sheet music and allows students to share their work. I will show students how to use this program to write music on the staff and how to export their work in PDF form to send to me or to print for their own use. Parents will need to create and verify a FREE account on Noteflight.com before the 2nd day of the course. No need to give away personal information nor sign on to a "trial" version. When we begin using Noteflight, young students may need assistance logging into Noteflight. Parents, please make sure your student is logged into Noteflight at the start of class so we can start on time. Students will need to have their instrument with them as they log into Zoom.
