In the first half of the course, I will show you the general rules of song-writing and some strategies for how to make a unique melody. Students will learn how to create melodies by inventing and manipulating motives. Next, we will talk about some different ways to develop a theme and how to use song forms to build a larger song.

The class is structured so that the majority of the learning happens with discussion and hands-on work. Students will be need to be willing to share their work and discuss it with me and their fellow classmates.

Students will also be given homework to practice and expand upon the concepts that we discuss in class. Written homework assignments will be due before class each week so that I can provide feedback and guidance.
