Have you ever heard of alkalizing foods, or an alkaline diet? Is this another one of those fads? Learners will consider the science as well as the fiction behind the so-called alkalizing diet. A lecture and discussion will consider whether foods ultimately form acids or bases in your body. We will discuss how the pH of the human body may or may not be affected by acid-forming vs. base-forming (i.e. alkalizing) foods. Importantly, we will discuss how the chemical properties of fruits and vegetables can be inferred by their color. There will be no homework for this course. Learner progress will be evaluated by participation in the group discussion regarding foods and their chemical properties. There are no pre-requisites. This class is appropriate for any learner with an interest to learn more about the daily activity of eating food.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Are you interested to learn more about science? I create fun courses and experiments related to chemistry. I am patient and tuned in to student needs, and I have a teaching style that connects well with K-12 learners. I ensure that every student takes away something meaningful from each of my Outschool courses. I help learners foster a sense of self confidence, by relating science to everyday things that they already know. I'm a homeschool teacher and community college professor.
