Solving quadratics is widely considered the most difficult unit in Algebra 1. My goal is to make it accessible for students who really struggle with math. Topics covered include the following: Session 1-Finding the discriminant Session 2-Quadratic Formula Session 3-Quadratic word problems Session 4-Taking square roots Session 5-Factoring (also called factorising) Session 6-Solving quadratics by factoring I use scaffolded instruction, which simply means that I provide more support at the...
Students will gain a deeper understanding of solving quadratics, particularly factoring, using the quadratic formula, and taking square roots.
I will provide practice problems following each session. Students are encouraged to complete these and are on the honor system. Answer keys provided. Online quizzes (no login required) will also be provided following each session. Students may retake the quizzes and score is provided immediately upon submitting the quiz.
Students should have a calculator that displays radicals in radical form (not decimal form only); the most commonly used calculator for this is the TI 30XS Multiview. Graphing calculator is not recommended. Students should bring paper, pencil, and their calculator to each session.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
2 hours 15 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
