Class Experience

This is the second in a series of Minecraft themed challenges. These challenges may be completed in any order. The teacher recognizes that within a classroom, students have various abilities. Problems offered will range in difficulty level. This class uses content found in typical 5th and 6th-grade math curriculum. The course takes place entirely on the Zoom platform. WE DO NOT PLAY MINECRAFT. Because this class is designed to give students choices and allow for student participation, it may run longer than the scheduled time. A story and pictures will move the students through the Minecraft themed mystery. They will progress on their journey to complete the mystery by solving math problems. The teacher will set the stage by engaging students with the opening scene. A short review of mathematical concepts will lead to students solving their problems. This review time serves a two-fold purpose. It gets the student ready to solve math problems, and it gives the teacher a glimpse of the students' abilities. Students will work individually and cooperatively to solve 5th and 6th-grade level math and logic problems on their mission to "Stop the Raid."

Scenario:
You are on a multi-player server. You have just finished building the wall around your village. You have 10 houses, pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens inside the village. Your tools include a pickaxe, sword, and shovel. Your chest is stocked with emeralds. You hear your mom call out, "Time for dinner! You can play again after you finish eating." You go back to your house and log off. When you finally finish your dinner, you log back on and find a raid in progress. Can you stop the raid before your village is destroyed?

Students will solve 5th and 6th-grade math and logic problems individually which will move the experience meter. This allows the group to move through the challenge. The teacher will assess each student's understanding by asking students to show their answers on a whiteboard or paper held up to their webcam and/or type the answer in the chatbox. After answers are checked, students may be assisted by the teacher and/or other students if help is needed in solving a problem. The mystery is being worked through and solved as a group. There may be a range of problems to choose from to earn points towards the group total with varying levels of difficulty to accommodate differences in student ability. Additionally, students are welcome to message the teacher after class regarding any problem they would like clarified. This class is designed as practice for mathematical concepts typically learned in 5th and 6th-grade. To encourage students, some support and review will be given as needed based on the dynamics of the group.

Not all mathematical topics can be covered in a 60-minute group class. All mathematical topics are 5th and 6th-grade level appropriate. Mathematical topics covered may include, but are not limited to, the following list:

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division of Fractions with like denominators and unlike denominators

Learning Goals

This class is designed to review and reinforce 5th and 6th-grade mathematical concepts. It may also include some logic challenges appropriate for the 5th and 6th-grade classrooms. Specific content may vary depending on the level of the students and the time they take to solve the problems. The teacher has a bank of possible problems and will be adjusting the difficulty level based on the needs of the students and the time constraints of the class as the mystery progresses. To help students prepare for the class, a worksheet with answers will be uploaded into the classroom section. This will be available no later than May 19, 2020.

This mystery challenge has a Minecraft setting. The storyline follows the situations a player might find in the game. We will not be playing Minecraft. This is all in the Zoom classroom. A story and pictures are used to move the mystery challenge along. This is a math class that uses a Minecraft theme. Because this class is designed to give students choices and allow for student participation, it may run longer than the scheduled time. This is not an official Minecraft product. It is not approved by or officially associated with Mojang.
Supply List
A working webcam is necessary for interaction and assessing student progress. A whiteboard and dry erase marker are recommended, however paper and a marker may be substituted. Students will need a paper and pencil for calculations. A ruler with standard and metric units should also be available. Acess to a printer is optional if students wish to print the pre-class preparation worksheet or the post-class reinforcement worksheet. Both of these worksheets are optional and provided as a courtesy to help learners.

I love teaching math! My own children have enjoyed playing Minecraft, and I know how popular it is with this age set. I also lead and coordinate activities for homeschoolers in my area. As such, I enjoy seeing them work together to solve problems. As a former middle school classroom teacher, I thought creating this mystery would be a fun way to have students interact with each other while having fun solving math problems.
