Solve a Mystery II Grades 3-4 Math: Minecraft Themed Raid Challenge

This is the second in a series of Minecraft themed challenges.  These challenges may be completed in any order. The teacher recognizes that within a classroom, students have various abilities.  Problems offered will range in difficulty level. This class uses content found in typical 3rd and 4th-grade math curriculum. The course takes place entirely on the Zoom platform. WE DO NOT PLAY MINECRAFT.  A story and pictures will move the students through the Minecraft themed mystery. Because this class is designed to give students choices and allow for student participation, it may run longer than the scheduled time. Students will progress on their journey to complete the mystery by solving math problems. The teacher will set the stage by engaging students with the opening scene. A short review of mathematical concepts will lead to students solving their problems. This review time serves a two-fold purpose.  It gets the student ready to solve math problems, and it gives the teacher a glimpse of the students' abilities. Students will work individually and cooperatively to solve 3rd and 4th-grade level math and logic problems on their mission to "Stop the Raid."

Scenario:
You are on a multi-player server. You have just finished building the wall around your village. You have 10 houses, pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens inside the village.  Your tools include a pickaxe, sword, and shovel.  Your chest is stocked with emeralds. You hear your mom call out, "Time for dinner!  You can play again after you finish eating."  You go back to your house and log off. When you finally finish your dinner, you log back on and find a raid in progress.  Can you stop the raid before your village is destroyed?

Students will solve 3rd and 4th-grade math and logic problems individually and as a group which will move the experience meter.  This allows the group to move through the challenge.  The teacher will assess each student's understanding by asking students to show their answers on a whiteboard or paper held up to their webcam and/or type the answer in the chatbox.  After answers are checked, students may be assisted by the teacher and/or other students if help is needed in solving a problem.  The mystery is being worked through and solved as a group. There may be a range of problems to choose from to earn points towards the group total with varying levels of difficulty to accommodate differences in student ability.  Additionally, students are welcome to message the teacher after class regarding any problem they would like clarified.  This class is designed as practice for mathematical concepts typically learned in 3rd and 4th-grade. To encourage students, some support and review will be given as needed based on the dynamics of the group.
