Class Experience

This class is designed to review and reinforce 3rd and 4th-grade mathematical concepts. It may also include some logic challenges appropriate for the 3rd and 4th-grade classrooms. Specific content may vary depending on the level of the students and the time they take to solve the problems. The teacher has a bank of possible problems and will be adjusting the difficulty level based on the needs of the students and the time constraints of the class as the mystery progresses.
I love teaching math! My own children have enjoyed playing Minecraft, and I know how popular it is with this age set. I also lead and coordinate activities for homeschoolers in my area. As such, I enjoy seeing them work together to solve problems. As a former classroom teacher, I thought creating this mystery would be a fun way to have students interact with each other while having fun solving math problems.
This is a one time class. No homework is assigned. An optional pre-class sheet with practice problems, explanations, and answers is available in the classroom section of this course. This sheet may be used before class to help students prepare for class or after class to review and reinforce concepts.

A working webcam is necessary for interaction and assessing student progress. A whiteboard and dry erase marker are recommended, however paper and a marker may be substituted. Students will need a paper and pencil for calculations. A ruler with standard and metric units should also be available.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The teacher will be checking student understanding throughout the lesson, and students may be asked to explain the problem solving process. Students should have a whiteboard and dry erase marker or paper and pencil. There may be times when the teacher asks the students to hold these up to check work progress. Depending on the class needs, the teacher may ask the students to type some of their answers into the chatbox. Students must have a working webcam to ensure the teacher can check for understanding.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This mystery has a Minecraft setting. The storyline follows the situations a player might find in the game. We will not be playing Minecraft. This is all in the Zoom classroom. A story and pictures are used to move the mystery along. This is a math class that uses a Minecraft theme. Because this class is designed to give students choices and allow for student participation, it may run longer than the scheduled time. This is not an official Minecraft product. It is not approved by or officially associated with Mojang.
