US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Jan Brett is a celebrity in the world of children's literature! Her stories, both original and retold, coupled with her beautiful and telling illustrations have the ability to grab a reader from the first page. During our 6 weeks together, learners will follow the book schedule below, reading one specific story * * *outside of class* * * in preparation for a lively and deep dive discussion in our live meetings (stories are encouraged to be read in any way that feels best: as a read aloud, independent reading, shared reading, etc.!) Discussion topics will be both prompted by me, as well as learner interest led. While we will communicate about story elements of setting, problem and resolution, cause and effect and character development (to name a few), reader opinions on theme, character actions, story interest and personal connections will be HIGHLY encouraged, fostered and modeled! Each week's class will culminate with a book-themed activity (i.e completing a sentence prompt from a teacher-created template, imaginative illustrating, watercolor painting, predicting a character's future journey, etc.) REQUIREMENTS: While there will only be a small amount of writing (i.e. completing a teacher given sentence, or writing a few single word labels for an illustration), learners should feel comfortable stretching sounds to make words. Accurate spelling is NOT NECESSARY, but rather it is the independent initiative of the learner, and connection to the text, that is important :) For example, if my sentence prompt began with "This story is joyful because..." a learner's completed work after stretching a sound may look like this: "This story is joyful because the ber lovd his famly like I lov my famly." ("This story is joyful because the bear loved his family like I love my family.") And this would be FANTASTIC! BOOK SCHEDULE: Week 1: Town Mouse, Country Mouse by Jan Brett Week 2: Mossy by Jan Brett Week 3: Cinders by Jan Brett Week 4: Comet's Nine Lives by Jan Brett Week 5: Berlioz the Bear by Jan Brett Week 6: The Snowy Nap by Jan Brett
